Steel Fabricator
updated: Apr 29, 2012, 7:46 PM

Heat plates for propane grill

I need to replace 3 heat plates on my grill. They are stainless steel and have a very basic design. I looked online and the ones I found will cost me $26 a piece. I'm curious if there are any metal workers in the county who could make replacements at a more reasonable cost.

It might cost you $50 just to talk to the guy. And keep in mind you're asking for a custom or special order and stainless ain't cheap. I believe you'd be better off with the manufactured replacement parts, fwiw.

that doesn't seem too expensive... But, there is a place on Anacapa & Ortega that does metal work.

Unless it is simply a matter of cutting a square piece of commonly available square stock, You'd easily spend a lot more having something made by a local shop.

Assume that a fabricator will expect to make $75 to $150 an hour PLUS the cost of material; how long would it take to make these parts? (take into account the time to discuss things and figure out the project, setup, breakdown, and finishing time).

Central Machine on E. Guitterrez would be a good source, but their minimum is about the same as your price for two of the plates. I don't know what you mean by "basic design", but if there is any bending or welding involved, you are better off with the $26 price.

Does high school still have a metal shop? Have them make a dozen out of cheap steel for ya, for a donation to their shop fund.

I needed a metal plate to replace the internal deflector in my wood stove. The stove company was out of business. I didn't have any luck finding a local shop to make one. So I got a 1/4-inch thick piece of steel plate and cut it myself on my bandsaw. I had to buy a metal-cutting blade, but that's all.

If the manufacturer is selling them at $26 each and probably stamped a few thousand of them, how is a local craftsman going to hand make you three and beat that price?
Never. going. to. happen.
