Top of Ye Week To Ya. Thinkin' about the people I used to hang out with when I was a transient many, many beers ago in Santa Barbara. There was a guy named "Blues" he was my favorite he talked like Samuel Elliott, that down to earth low voice just from the tone of his voice you knew he was cool. Blues was pretty mellow he didn't bother anyone. I remember an Indian feller named Chief slept in a green VW Van, and there was my old drinking buddy Rick we pounded many a Jim Beam. Then there was Jack and Darrel almost redrumed me on City College Hill cause I had over 500.00 Dollar in my pocket and they nude it. Body was aching so badly that night I couldn't sleep but I shut my eyes and lay there half in and out of it. I heard Darrell ask Jack "You think he's asleep yet?" "Ain't gonna matter when I stick him with that knife" Jack answered. I didn't wait to see whom they were talkin about I nude it twas me. I opened my eyes made sure that knife wasn't in no one's hands. Yawned and rolled right over the edge of that hill overlooking our beautiful Marina. I did drop a few feet before I slammed my rib cage into a rock; that really hurt. I rolled with it the rest of the way down pretty much landing on my feet which I beat as quick as I could away from there. I never saw Jack again but I'd see Darrell now and again thru the years in AA meetings. We never talked just greeted each other. AA was funny like that. Anonymous like one great big happy family of screw ups how could you hold a grudge against yourself? I remember a guy named Steve from New York he was a big tough Irish beer drinker, then there was Big Red they were always getting into fights. I remember one night all 3 of us were sleeping in this old abandoned gas station across from the employment office. I crashed out early those two started fighting .Things were flying around, smashing. They looked like two old dinosaurs scared the HELL outta me. Big Red was like 6'6 250 he was solid and no one to mess with. Steve 6'3 about 190. I was a skinny as a rail 6'6 165 in those days. I wasn't much of a fighter unless I was really drunk. Big Red was always hitting me up for a buck. I always gave it to him the last time I saw Big Red was behind the Lawn Bowling joint on DLV sitting on a chair he asked me for a buck and I gave it to him.
Most of the transients back then were pretty mellow. Even Jack, he would only kill you if he knew you had money or if you crossed him in some way. He looked a lot like Jesus .I was SNOT a very mellow person back then. I probably gave other transients a bad name back then. Kinda like some of those JackAshes out there nowadaze. Except I never did no poo poo on the sidewalk or in public for that matter. Of course the city was more open with bathrooms back then. One could always find a place to go. It sure don't seem like 32 years ago, but it was. I miss those old days there was crime back then too. Not as many robberies though. You really did not have to worry much about getting robbed when you were houseless. Now you have to worry about getting killed. I hear a lot of stories of the homeless getting beat out there especially around Check Time which is coming up. Not just the houseless but the poor, disabled, and elderly. Only take out and carry what you need. This has been a Public Service Announcement from Roger the Scanner Roy, Boy, Guy Have a great Weekend and be Safe.

When I was houseless we raised a little HELL now and again. We worked though for our grub and drink. If there was no work we dumpster dived, or ate Beans, Rice, Powdered Milk from the Sally or Noodles and vegetables from Wings of Love. We didn't intimidate and beat people out of their money. The first Summer Solstice Parade here I joined in dancing with my bottle of booze. Those were the daze. I'm glad I'm not a kid growing up today. Quite Ironic the guy that the Solstice Parade was started for celebrating his birthday lived here where I live. It's like a little piece of Heaven on Milpas Street. Have a great Weekend Dog Willing We will see you on Monday. Roger
