April 22, 2012 - Mother Earth

Listen? Can you hear your Mother calling? It's Earth Day in our little blue town by the big blue sea, and other little towns, and big ones as well. Earth Day was first observed on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. But somehow, it has made its way into April, which is generally a nicer month for hanging out in the park.

There is a member of the dedicated staff who will shoot laser beams from her eyes through your head if you happen to tell her you've purchased a new hybrid car to be more "green". You see, she believes that the solution lies not in retail, but in action ... or really inaction. She thinks that if one day a week, each of us didn't drive our car, a huge impact would result. Before you jam up the comments board, it is a given that some folks don't ever drive. But if those of us who do, don't ... well, she could be right.

And on that note, we'd like to give you the Sunday lineup! The Dog of the Week is Jack, the Boxer, the Cat of the Week is Maverick. And if these cuties make you want a pal, the Non-Profit of the Week is K-9 PALs, who can hook you up. The Urban Hikers take us on a stroll along Butterfly Beach, Mark MacDonald reports on his field trip to the Sonoma Film Festival, and Kelsey Abkin, our Teen Voice muses over 4-20.

---- Edhat Stuff ----------------------------------

TEEN VOICE: Kelsey Abkin ponders the wisdom of a day dedicated to smoking weed.

Mark McDonald attended the Sonoma International Film Festival last weekend and gives us the inside scoop.

NON-PROFIT OF THE WEEK: K-9 Placement and Assistance League, Inc., K-9 PALS, is the all-volunteer, non-profit organization that provides medical care, support, and more for dogs in SBC Animal Shelters.

URBAN HIKE: This week the Urban Hikers explore the sights from Butterfly Beach to the Coral Casino and tell some of the history of The Breakers, The Biltmore and the Coral Casino.

Last weekend, Linda Smythe went on a Carpinteria Garden Tour. It was her first tour but certainly won't be her last. [pics]

CAT OF THE WEEK: This is our black beauty of a cat named Maverick. He is our handsome majestic boy. We love him to pieces!

DOG OF THE WEEK: This is Jack. He is a very special boxer, rescued from the shelter about a year ago.
