Bobbing For Kebabs
updated: Apr 21, 2012, 7:30 AM
Does anyone know of a good place to get a doner kebab? That's the kind where they shave the meat from
off of a spit and serve it on flatbread. They are delicious but I haven't been able to find a good one in SB.

Have you tried Mediterra Cafe & Market on Hollister? I thought they sold that type of kebab at one point.

Try looking for shwarma which is meat on a spit roasted vertically and shaved off as needed. Try the Greek place just west of State on ?Haley? BTW I lived in the middle east for years but am not familiar with what a "doner" kabob is. I've never heard "doner" used to describe a kabob.

Try India House on Calle Real in Goleta. New and so good! It's next to nugget and kfc by trader joes.

They have shwarma at I.V. Deli too, but I haven't noticed the vertical spit the last few times I've gotten falafel there. Maybe they don't actually do it that way. I've heard of Doner kebab in the movie, "The Kebab Connection" which takes place in Berlin. One of my favorite movies.

Been all over the world, all kinds of countries from Turkey to Vietnam have doner kebabs. Sometimes they use flat bread, other times a roll. But it's got cucumbers and spicy sauce in it. I haven't found a good place in sb either. the search continues.

Other than expensive Petros restaurant, the Greek House and McKensie Market are the only outlets for Greek food. How nice it would be to have good Greek dining at modest prices. Has anyone tried the fast Greek food at Daphne's in Ventura? Wish we had a Daphne's here. Oh, Metropolus Market has some good Greek dishes - try the kefaloteri (cheese) on pasta, scrambled eggs, pizza - uncommonly tasty. The moussaka and pastitsio are welcome pastas, a bit like lasagna. Yiassou - Metropolus Market - we need another Greek dining spot down or mid-town or a place with good kebabs to go.

Farther north--Orcutt Burgers in Orcutt used to do shwarma type gyros and they were fantastic! Uptown SLO has two mediterranean places right next door to each other. One does the shwarma, one does not. OHHHH, for a Hagopian's!

Presidio Market corner of Victoria and Santa Barbara Streets has middle eastern food now in addition to the Mexican food they've always offered.

We don't call it Doner Kebob in the US, it's a Gyro.
