K-9 Placement and Assistance League, Inc., K-9 PALS, is the all-
volunteer, non-profit organization that provides medical care,
support, adoption promotions, and advocacy for the dogs of the
Santa Barbara County Animal Shelters.
March of 2012 marks the 12th Anniversary of K-9 PALS. Since its
inception in 2000, K-9 PALS, has been helping thousands of dogs
by restoring their health, providing them with behavior training,
and finding them loving homes.
With the help of K-9 PALS, the Santa Barbara County Animal
Shelter will save approximately 95% of the dogs impounded at the
shelter, return more than 43% of the dogs to their owners, and
find homes for more than 400 adoptable dogs each year through
adoptions, foster and sanctuary homes, and partnering with other
animal welfare and adoption organizations.
K-9 PALS volunteers contribute over 14,000 hours of service
annually in the community and for the shelter. Because of the
skills and dedication of our volunteers, K-9 PALS has been able to
greatly increase the amount of service, as well as the daily care and mental well-being, for homeless
dogs in the local shelter. Our volunteers organize and participate in fundraising events, off site events
to promote adoptions, provide education for responsible pet ownership, and provide behavior training
for shelter dogs in "real life" settings around the community.
Throughout the past 12 years, K-9 PALS has developed many successful and innovative programs
and projects for the Santa Barbara County Shelter. K-9 PALS has provided several capital
improvements at the Shelter. These include the Visitor's Garden where prospective adopters meet
dogs for adoption, a large fully-fenced dog Training area, several exercise yards, a storage building,
and partnered with the County of Santa Barbara for the major Kennel Building remodel project which
included a new and improved roof design and new kennels.
K-9 PALS has been providing FREE training sessions with a professional behavior trainer for adopters
of shelter dogs, and shelter volunteers for the past 10 years, and will continue to do so as long as
funding is available.
K-9 PALS main source of funding is donations. Donations allow K-9 PALS to provide high quality
veterinary care, surgeries, medications, special diet foods, positive reward-based training, special
events and promotions that would otherwise not be available for the Santa Barbara Shelter dogs.
Your tax-deductible donation to K-9 PALS goes directly towards caring for and finding homes for
homeless and abandoned dogs in Santa Barbara County. In addition to making an unrestricted
donation, you can make a donation to a specific category allocated to the Medical Fund, food, senior
dogs, Sanctuary Dogs, advertising, special events, or building.
K-9 PALS donors are able to honor their family, pets, and friends, with a customized plaque that will
be displayed on a dog kennel at the Santa Barbara County Shelter. Donation for a plaque is a
minimum of $100.
