Uber local and uber expensive, Occhiali, but they have beautiful things. Costco, if you're a member, good selection and good prices.

I just went to Costco today and it was far less expensive than any other place I had been before. My insurance covered almost all of the eye exam, progressive lenses, and frames. Even without insurance, it is still pretty inexpensive.

Goleta Valley Optical in Magnolia Shopping Center has excellent prices and great service. I bought two pairs of prescription glasses for $49.88 total.

Ditto Goleta Valley Optical. It's cheaper for me to buy glasses there without insurance than it is to buy them WITH my insurance plan at other places. Costco may (or may not) be a tad cheaper, depending on what you get, but I much prefer shopping at locally owned companies like Goleta Valley Optical. Also, they've got an extremely helpful, friendly staff.

Occhiali has a great selection (especially the Montecito location) and terrific customer service. I've gone with the cheaper places before but sometimes they didn't get things right the first time.

If you have insurance, use the provider that is covered by your insurance plan. If not, refer to the posts above.

When I had insurance and a thick wallet I liked Occhiali. When I hit hard times I turned to GV Optical. When I hit bottom I ordered from Zinni or EyeBuyDirect online.

I bought one pair of glasses from Goleta Valley Optical and wasn't very pleased with them. All the glasses I've bought (for my husband, two kids and me) from Costco have been less expensive and seem of better quality than what GVO sold us.

Costco was way cheaper than the "free pair" that I could get with my insurance eye exam at the corner of Hollister and Patterson.

Goleta Valley Optical in Magnolia Center if I am paying Eye& Vision Care at Patterson & Hollister if my insurance is paying Costco if I am splitting it with my insurance for something not fully covered (they handle complex financial wrangling unusually well and my insurance company loves them) All but E&V are very cheap, all have excellent knowledgable staff (though at Costco the faces tend to change more often). E&V and Costco both have onsite doctors who can do full exams and consult. Dr Corby @ E&V has done some outstanding work for me over the years and has worked through some tough issues with my family doctor and my insurance. Also have had very good work on my grandkids from Dr Bream over at Costco.

For years I've been finding unique eyeglasses at Montecito Optometry at 1147 Coast Village Rd. Barbara will help you select, and will be honest about what looks good on you. They don't have the lowest prices, but I just love the designers they carry, and I've never had a problem with quality of the work.

Blind studies (no pun intended) say that Costco has the highest rate of accuracy of the actual end product (the lenses) matching the prescription.

Because of my unique visual problems, my eyeglasses cost $600 at Goleta Valley Optical. I returned 18 months later because the lenses were discolored around the edges. Instead of selling me new glasses, they told me I had 6 months left on the warranty and ordered new lenses without charge. I appreciate their honesty and ethics because I thought the warranty had expired. They are always pleasant when my glasses need adjustment.

ZenniOptical.com. They start at $12. My neighbor, who is an ophthalmologist, gets his glasses from them. There was also an article in the New York Times about them, so I tried them. You pick a frame, type in your current prescription, and get them in your mailbox in a few weeks. It's great! Two things though: 1) you need to know your Pupilary Distance - which docs don't always write on your prescription and 2) the frames are not super fashionable. But the lenses are perfect, and at that price, you can have an extra pair of glasses in the car, the garage, wherever you need them. And they're perfect for kids, because it doesn't break the bank if they lose them.

I would definitely choose Costco as they are the least expensive and have a great selection of frames......I have been going to them since they arrived in SB. I have insurance and it is still least expensive then the insurance would pay.
