Who is a good optometrist/ophthalmologist in Santa Barbara? My current opt. is running every test in the book on my eyes - which I naively thought was just good patient care. But, I just found out he's charging (and getting paid) by both me and my insurance company!

Stuart Winthrop is the ophthalmologist I have been going to for several years. I like and trust him. Note that even though I have fabulous insurance I still have to pay upfront for a part of the treatment (the initial test, perhaps?) because most insurances, including mine, do not cover it. He came highly recommended to me and I in turn also recommend him.

Dr. Pavloff is incredible! I have been seeing him for many years. He is knowledgeable, friendly, caring and will refer you out if needed. I had to be referred to a retinal specialist and Dr. Pavloff sent me to the best, Dr. Pieremici. I can't say enough about either of them!

Dr. Poulin, Associated Eye Specialists, bldg on Hollister, adjacent to Goleta Valley Hospital. I'm darned near blind without glasses and have been going to him for decades, as has my whole family (and lots of colleagues at UCSB).

Two very different things, but for an optometrist, Joanne Gronquist is great and for an ophthalmologist, if retinal problems are a concern, I second, or third, Dr. Pieramici.

Dr. Barry Mast on Quinientos is both reasonable and thorough. I just got my glasses and contacts updated using him, and he was less than most everyone I called. He checked a lot of things on me because I have astigmatism, near-sightedness, and am just entering the bi-focal age (!) Highly recommend him.

I also highly recommend Joanne Gronquist (569-1504) our whole family has been going to her for years (my mom, myself, my hubby, his parents, his 3 brothers). She was originally recommended by my mom's co-worker and we are so happy we switched over to her.

Poulin is great. They also have an optometrist on site with a complete eyeglass store for one-stop shopping. The glasses are a little pricey there, but you can always take your prescription elsewhere.

Dr. Zelco is very well trained and has great bedside manner. He is conservative in treatment options. That is good. For retina problems I think Dr. Nasir or Dr. Avery are among the best. They are at California Retina Consultants. 805 -963-1648.

Sorry in advance for the sort of unrelated story, but Dr Zelco (or someone at his office - his wife, I think?) found my phone years ago, and called one of the most recent contacts from the phone to ask them to get in touch with me & let me know where my phone was. They returned it to me a few days later when my friend finally got in touch with me. I have no experience with him as a doctor, but the office put a decent amount of effort into helping some random stranger get their cell phone back, and I thought that was telling of the character of the people who work there.

Dr. Zelko and Vicki Wait are the absolute greatest! It's important to know that many of the opthalmologists named already are really terrific but, too many of them concentrate their time on money-making surgeries like Lasik. They wind up never being available for those of us who just need to get in to see them for eye trouble. I've gone to several named, and have been with Dr. Zelko and Vicki Waite for more than a decade. They absolutely ROCK!!

I vote for optometrist Larry Bickford's private practice in San Roque area. His health exam is thorough, and he is meticulous and up to date with challenging contact lens fitting. Also, his staff takes extra time with insurance and all sorts of questions and is a real help with choosing frames. Over two decades I'm always seeing someone I know in the reception room. Some grew up with this doctor and are bringing their own youngsters. It's obvious Dr. Larry and his office enjoy their job giving each of us personal attention.
