$1 Million to Support Homeless Veterans on Coast
updated: Mar 27, 2012, 11:30 AM

Source: Lois Capps' Office

Today Congresswoman Lois Capps (CA-23) announced that public housing authorities on the Central Coast have been awarded nearly $1 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to supply permanent housing and case management for homeless veterans in the Tri-Counties. The Housing Authority of Santa Barbara County has been awarded $250,719, the Housing Authority of San Luis Obispo has been awarded $391,745, and the Housing Authority of the City of Buenaventura was awarded $271,148. The permanent supportive housing assistance grants are provided through the Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program (HUD-VASH), a program administered by HUD, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and local housing agencies.

"Our veterans have served our nation with distinction and we owe it to them to ensure they have the services and support they need when they return home. The Obama Administration has made great strides over the past couple of years in this area, having already reduced veterans' homelessness by twelve percent. But there is much more to do. The public housing authorities on the Central Coast do tremendous work in our local communities and I am confident they will put these important funds to work quickly to house our veterans," said Capps.

In 2009, President Obama and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki announced the federal government would work to end homelessness amongst the nation's veterans by 2015. Veterans are more likely to be homeless than any other demographic group. According to data compiled by the VA in January 2011, 67,495 homeless Veterans spent the night on the streets of America and an estimated 144,842 Veterans spent at least one night in an emergency shelter or transitional housing program. All this worn out "representative" does is announce more funny money grants and welfare programs. She truly is a socialist to the core. Here's some breaking news Lois; the U.S. was not founded based on government hand outs. The greatness of this country was created by the hard work of LEGAL immigrants who embraced the free market, MORAL capitalism, and liberty, NOT government intervention. Do us a favor and take it elsewhere.

@580 There hasn't been "moral capitalism" in this country in decades.

SY- and your point is? That doesn't change the fact that that is what is the foundation of our society. Are you arguing that a socialized system is preferable to MORAL capitalism? If so, you couldn't be more mistaken. The best socialized system by nature can never be morally superior to the best system based on capitalism, because by its own nature, socialism is taking(stealing) from one who has labored and giving it to the other who has not.

They laugh at Lois in Washington because she "brings home the bacon.....scent." Even Helene has recently seen the light, but getting throttled by her puppet masters to get back in line. Thanks for the bacon bits Lois. We'll be there for your retirement party.

And capitalism sure has turned out looking like stealing from those who labor. Why bother to have a civilization if you aren't willing to work *with* your neighbor to the benefit of all, somewhere in the middle of the spectrum.

Capitalism, socialism, morals, schmorals.

In the end of the day, dozens upon dozens of men and women who volunteered to fight for OUR COUNTRY and who have subsequently fallen on tough times will not have to sleep on the street.

Complain all you want about YOUR tax rate, but I'm glad a portion of MY taxes have gone to this effort.

I'm all for it! Don't like it then some of you should go out and volunteer to fight for our country during a war!

Ms. Capps is a very effective member of the United States Congress. Unless the GOP nominates a serious candidate, she will keep on winning election after election.

597, the problem is that this money is NOT coming from your taxes. It is being borrowed from China. Roger, I did serve in the USMC during war time.

@602P We borrow far less from China than we borrow from ourselves. China holds roughly 8% total of US public debt.

Fighting in world war 2 was protecting our freedom. Going to Afghanistan or Iraq is hardly protecting us here at home. What it is doing is bankrupting us.

Totally agree with 597. Only one who has never spent a day in uniform could oppose a program to help homeless veterans. The only thing more shameful than to oppose this program would be to lie about one's service in order to justify one's opposition to it.

For the next 10 years raise corporate taxes to 25%, increase every current income tax bracket's rate AND cutoff level by 25%, tax ALL dividends and capital gains the same as income, and cap spending at its current levels.

The "sky is falling" crowd will find out that life is just fine with $100/bottle champagne instead of $125/bottle champagne, and that they have plenty of money to pay their gardeners, cleaning crew, and butler.

@580: "Legal immigrants"? If you're not of American Indian descent, someone in your family was "illegal" at some point. That's the beauty of the U.S. People seeking freedom for whatever reason, were able to find it here. Let's not forget that.

In regards to our Veterans, they deserve this. They deserve to be taken care of, whether they need homes, medications, therapy, etc.. Period.

I don't envy Lois or any of the 434 other representatives. Their job is to do the right thing for their constituents and their country, knowing full well that the vast majority of the people they represent are blithering idiots.

Capitalism barely existed when the U.S. was founded, and it was not founded on it, but rather on enlightenment principles, which are also the basis of socialism. The countries with the highest quality of life have strong socialist components.

SY - Go to the midwest once and smell the freedom - a hand shake deal is still the norm and capitalism still exists and thrives -

it's the hand out - nanny states that are struggling - crushed by progressive overhead costs - Unemployment back there is at 4 % - Just showing the system works when it is not over run by Fruits and Nuts

Maybe you could figure out a way that all of this flurry of press releases by Capps, the candidate, in the upcoming election (who was only going to run for re-election once) but now seeking her 5th re-election keeps releasing and consolidate them all into just a once a month list.
