Prescott Ely Barney
updated: Mar 25, 2012, 10:21 AM

By Plain Dealer

"Pres" Ely Barney died suddenly at his home in Santa Barbara, California on February 23rd, 2012.

Pres as his close friends knew him, was a fiercely loyal friend, and a man of wide ranging interests. A voracious reader, Pres also lived a very active life, encompassing his love of the outdoors, traveling in Central America, the Caribbean, and the rest of the Americas. He had a zealous interest in everything Maya, Inca, Aztec, or the ancient in general.

An expert in numismatics, Pres has a vast collection of coins-as well as stamps, books, and masks, which were representative of his travels and his professional experience.

One of Prescott's many volunteer activities, his involvement in "Three Corner Round", a not-for-profit youth camp based in the Sierra Nevadas, was a life-long connection to many friends and the western mountains.

His wife, Carol Ann Bond-Barney, survives Prescott. Carol grew up in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. She and Prescott spent many happy times in their houses in Santa Barbara and Nova Scotia. Prescott was born in Cleveland, Ohio, November 20, 1952, to Virginia Ely and William Raymond Barney, Jr. Prescott is survived by his brother William R. Barney III, nephew Williams R. Barney IV, and niece Kathleen McColl Barney, all of Atlanta, Georgia. In addition, Prescott is survived by his stepbrother, Thomas H. Paterson, his wife, Hyechong and their daughter, Anastasia, of Tiverton, Rhode Island.

Pres attended Hawken School until 8th grade, and then transferred to the Kingsley Hall School. Upon graduation from Kingsley Hall in 1972 Pres attended Goddard College in Vermont.

Like the four winds Pres pursued in life, he was cremated and his ashes spread in the hills about Santa Barbara near one of his favorite watering holes. The many friends Pres made in life are a testimony to his unswerving loyalty and love of life.
Donations can be made to Three Corner Round or World Wildlife Fund.
Memorial Services to follow in July
