CAC of SB Awarded $5.2 Million Grant
updated: Mar 13, 2012, 11:10 AM
Source: Lois Capps' Office
Today Congresswoman Lois Capps (CA-23) announced that the Community Action Commission of Santa Barbara has been awarded a nearly $5.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to continue funding its Head Start program in Santa Barbara County. The program in Santa Barbara County serves over 1,300 families at 36 sites.
Operated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Head Start is a leader in early childhood development and education, and provides grants to public and private non-profits. Head Start focuses on helping preschoolers develop early reading and math skills and promotes school readiness through educational, health, and other services to children and families.
"This is great news for the Community Action Commission of Santa Barbara," said Capps. "For years, this successful program has provided critical assistance and services to thousands of families in our community. We all know how important the first years of a child's life are to determining success - both inside and outside the classroom. That's why it's so critical for our children to have access to quality early learning programs, like Head Start. The Community Action Commission has demonstrated the quality and effectiveness of its Head Start program, and in these difficult fiscal times these federal dollars are a wise investment for the future."
Community Action Commission of Santa Barbara was recently recognized for its outstanding achievements in early childhood education by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Continued federal funding was made possible by the demonstrated quality of its programs in Santa Barbara County.
"We are honored to receive the federal Head Start funding for Santa Barbara County once again. We are committed to serving children who would not otherwise go to pre-school, and preparing them for success in kindergarten and beyond," said Mattie Gadsby, Childrens' Services Director, Community Action Commission of Santa Barbara.

Great, More free handouts to support the increasing members of our community with their hands continually out... What happened to self pride and personal responsibility?

Just where does that $5.2 million go? Salaries and benefits for administrators? How much of it serves illegals?

With all this free money around, it looks like we are out of the recession and we have a balanced federal budget. Happy times are here again!

Community Action? How about if some/most/all of that money is used towards enforcing whatever protections we do have against the cadre of vagrants that have invaded State Street. Perhaps Ms. Capps and Ms. Schneider could take a walk on the 600 block of State Street some afternoon, and see how enjoyable it is.

I for one see where some of that money goes - to help feed low income seniors who would otherwise be costing you a lot more in tax payer money if they end up in the hospital all of the time or worse in expensive nursing homes! And keep dreaming if you think they would show you where the money goes! Never going to happen.

Spoken like a bunch of true edhat whiners. Nicely done folks. 930- I love that "would love to read the mission statement". As if you could read you actually would. 924-Let's see, money from this source of federal govt cannot be used for what you are proposing. Does anyone realize that Lois Capps' job is to do things like this? Getting federal money for our city is exactly what she is supposed to do. It may not go exactly where you want it, but it is none the less helping out people who live in our community. Helping people who probably don't have computers or the time to be online snarking.

The CAC has their IRS Form 990 with all of the information about "every last dime" of income, expenses, and salaries readily available on their website. I'm sure you'll be terribly disappointed at their very clear mission statement, lack of inflated salaries, and financial transparency. Anyone with a sense of "self pride" or "personal responsibility" should take a few minutes to obtain the facts before making uninformed criticisms and comments.

263942 - But obtaining facts is hard work and just plain boring. Much easier to jump to ones own conclusions based on hearsay and whatever Rush tells people to do.

You know, I HATE spending money on oil changes for my car. What a scam! Everyone knows that cars run on gas, not oil. I'm not going to spend one more dime on oil changes! I'm going to save so much money! That's a metaphor. I'm grateful Lois Capps sets better priorities. There is plenty of research, tracking data, whatever kind of evidence you'd want that every dime spent on Head Start is saved many times over in health care and justice costs. If you're too cheap to educate a child and keep that child healthy, you'll be paying for it later. I, for one, would rather pay for education than prisons. And you WILL be paying for one or the other. [for you folks reading this with your public school education: you're welcome.]

CAC helps Low Income Seniors..I worked there many years ago as a tray washer I lasted 3 days my arthritis was KILLING ME. I made miminum wage like 4.00 an hour. Everyone that works there in the kitchen work very hard. I picked lemons on San Marcos pass and it was easier than working in that kitchen.

I don't have a problem with this $$ or CAC, they sound like a decent organization. I am suspicious that I seem to be hearing, reading, and seeing more about what Lois Capps is doing now that it's election time. I never hear a peep about her for a good year and a half and then...whamo!..ever day a new Capps event or story or robo-call. It's a little disingenuous don't you think?

Really?! If you can't afford to educate or feed your own children....don't have any. These politicians are simply buying votes and by doing so are turning this country into a banana republic.
