Clay Martin Brown
updated: Mar 04, 2012, 10:46 AM

By Welch Ryce Haider

Clay left us unexpectedly at his home in Carpinteria on February 23, 2012. He was born on December 16, 1961 in Santa Monica to Paul and Nancy Habel Brown; their youngest of four sons. In 1968 the family moved to Carpinteria from the family home in Brentwood, Los Angeles. Clay was an exemplary student. Following graduation from Carpinteria High School in 1979 he studied a year in Germany at Gottingen University. He subsequently graduated from UCSB Magna Cum Laude with dual Bachelor's degrees in Spanish and German.

He taught at Carpinteria, San Marcos and Buena Ventura High Schools and SBCC Adult Ed classes. Clay ultimately began his profession as a full time interpreter and owner of his own interpreting service where he mainly worked with the medical community.

In 1998 Clay married Gloria Jimenez of Carpinteria, which was a joyful union as children of both families had been friends since childhood. Soon Clay and Gloria had two precious and adored sons- Max, now ten and Elliot, now eight.

Clay was pre-deceased by his father, Paul and is survived by his mother,Nancy of Carpinteria, dearest Max, Elliot, and their mother Gloria, and his brothers, Peter Brown of Orangevale, Ca. , Nicholas Katsenis (Anita) of Marina Del Rey, and Christopher Brown (Pam) of Santa Barbara. Clay will also be missed by his aunt Daphne Spencer, his cousins William and Catherine Spencer of Los Angeles, and all his nieces and nephews.

A memorial mass will be held at St. Joseph's Church in Carpinteria at Linden and El Carro Ln. on Monday, March 5th at 10am. Any donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, P.O. box 50, Memphis TN 38101-9929.
