Dorothy Eddy Low
updated: Mar 04, 2012, 10:39 AM

By Bakersfield Californian

Dorothy Eddy Low (Nee: Ewell) 1927 - 2012 Dorothy was born on June 15, 1927, in Santa Barbara, CA. She attended Santa Barbara schools until high school, where she attended and graduated from Taft Union High School in 1945.

She worked for the Taft City School District from 1945 to 1948, then moved to Salem, OR, and worked for the next five years at the Oregon State Department of Education. She moved back to Bakersfield in 1952, where she worked in architecture and engineering offices until she became Del Webb Corp.'s first employee when the company began developing the Southwest area, beginning with Del Webb's Kern City, Park Stockdale, and Stockdale Estate. Master planning began on the balance of their Southwest holdings, which included the property in and around California State University, Bakersfield. Del Webb Corp. became a joint venture with the Kern County Land Company, which became Stockdale Development Corporation. Eventually, a merger was negotiated with Tenneco, Inc. She worked 25 years in their endeavor, retiring in November 1985.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Low; her parents, Arthur and Mabel Ewell; stepdaughter, Jan Elaine Low; and sister, Barbara Ewell.

She is survived by stepsons, John Low and wife, Linda, and Don Low of Bakersfield; a special aunt and uncle, Louise and Barney May; and several cousins and their families in California, Oregon, and New Hampshire.

Dorothy's most enjoyable pleasures in the past 25 years were extensive travel throughout the world. She visited 45 of the 50 states and over 100 foreign countries, from Europe to Australia, Alaska to the Middle East, including an African safari on a month's tour, "Capetown to Caera."

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 5, 2012, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Southwest Memorial Chapel, 2739 Panama Lane. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. For condolences, please go to www.greenlawnmortuaryandcemetery.com.
