Now that Anacapa Dive Center has closed it's doors, where is a good place for a
group or individual to get open water SCUBA certified in town?

SBCC has a great Marine Diving certification program but that may not be what your looking for as it is a 2 year process.

I thought there was a dive shop also in Goleta. Did that close too? I really miss Anacapa Dive Center. :( Was planning on taking my toddler there for swimming lessons. Total bummer it closed. I got my PADI open-water, advanced, and nitrox certification there. I'm a total chicken, and the dive instructors did an awesome job of helping me become comfortable and competent. Anacapa Dive Center chartered a trip to Palau and Truk on the Aggressor Fleet in August 2003. My husband and I greatly enjoyed that scuba vacation. :) Sigh.

Santa Barbara City College’s Marine Diving Technologies Program is a recognized program in its field. It is the only community college degree program in the nation which is accredited by the Association of Commercial Diving Educators (ACDE), the International Diving Schools Association (IDSA) and the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI). The program trains and certifies for all levels of SCUBA diving.

To my knowledge you have to be open water certified to gain access to that program, plus it's not exactly what you'd call a basic scuba course

Blue Water Hunter in the harbor has wonderful, certified instructors who will individualize the instruction according to the students needs. Speak with Andy Taylor, owner for particular information.
