Scanner Reports 2-20-12
updated: Feb 20, 2012, 7:00 AM

By Roger the Scanner Guy

Monday-Monday...Many years ago I was a night Motel HELL manager in Santa Barbara. I only did it for a year. After doing it, I made a commitment never to work the night shift in Santa Barbara again. Too many weird things go on around here at night. No one pays enough money around here to babysit the weirdos. When I worked security, I saw some weird things but usually there were others working the same shift you could speak to on the radio. It wasn't like you were completely alone.

Back in the early 80's I worked for a fella who owned a janitor business. I hear police running his name sometimes as now he's a street drunk. A lot of people go crazy trying to make it here and I guess he's one of ‘em. We cleaned a couple bars, a shopping mall, did housecleaning during the day. He ran a twenty dollar special to clean an entire home to get more accounts. I was the flunky that got to clean most of the homes. I got 5 bucks an hour. One of our twenty dollar specials came from an older fella whose wife passed on a couple months earlier, in the bath tub. She had been in there for a while because her Husband was on a business trip. Whoever picked up the body did not get all of it. Craftsman Wet and Dry Vacs are very good for this type of work. Even so, there is no amount of money to ever get me to do this sort of work again.

Another housecleaning job I did for the guy was in a home on Foothill. You find out a lot of things about people by cleaning their homes. I'll tell ya - there are some scary people living here. The nicer someone is, the more I'm suspicious. This guy's home had some type of weird alter in a back room I wasn't supposed to go into. Nor was I supposed to vacuum the stuff off the floor. It wasn't no picnic putting it back, I'll tell ya. A few months after I cleaned the guy's home, after seeing all the weird things he had in there, I was working at a Tech Company in Goleta as a night security guard. The same dude was ringing the doorbell of the company I was working at - at 3 in the morning. I thought he knew I was the guy in his home - the guy that vacuumed up his cremated fellow skatanists. I thought he was there to collect my ashes. It didn't help that he looked like Jerry Garcia and he rode a Harley. I finally opened the door after the police showed up I figured the guy wasn't going to waste me in front of a cop. How silly of me really.

At the motel I got into several fights, got threatened all the time. One guy tried to rob me through the front window. I laughed at him he didn't have a gun. Local people do naughty deals in local motels from drugs, to sex, to otter thangs. Many people go to motels check in but never check out. Not alive anyway. What I dealt with mostly were drunks, drug dealers, and hookers. Don't ask I'll never tell you what motel it was. I can't really tell you what stirred up these old memories. Maybe it's hearing my old bosses name on the scanner "Drunk in Public" all the time. Maybe it's part of my insanity. Not becoming a success in Santa Barbara instead going insane like otters before me. Night Shifts and Nice People - two things I don't do.

I saw something in Craigslist that kinda threw me for a loop. In the Community section there is an ad dated 2/15/12, "Need info on my little brother's death, (Santa Barbara) It was reported as a suicide but one never knows here in Santa Barbara.
