Picture Perfect Class
updated: Feb 16, 2012, 7:34 PM

My partner has a Nikon D7000 and is interested in any photography classes that might help him learn more about this wonderful camera. Any suggestions?

I can't recommend a class but Samy's Camera has instructional Dvds for the D7000. Or you might look online at the Digitutor website for free.

Samy's has workshop style classes and City college has college classes and extension classes.

Good luck!

The best way is to read some of the manuals that are available (search on Amazon - there are several) for the D7000 and then take many many pictures and decide what works and figure out why.

I disagree that the best way is to teach oneself, which is probably why the original poster asked for a class recommendation. Taking a class (or a session with a tutor) is a great way to take advantage of tools and techniques that generally go unused or misunderstood. As mentioned before, Samy's and city college are good options. I believe Brooks occasionally offers weekend workshops and will have some leads on tutors.

If anyone in this town would know the answer to this question these folks would: Channel City Camera Club.

Brooks Institute is hands down the best place to learn the skills you are seeking. Contact Brooks and see what they are offering.

Keith Skelton at California Photography Workshops. Just moved here from LA and he offers awesome and affordable private instruction and workshops. There's a workshop in SB/Santa Ynez in June or July. You can google his name, too, for some of his commercial photography work.

Try Lyndadotcom (a local company) if your style of learning is self-paced video instruction.

My friends & I took Photo 109 at SBCC with Seantel Sanders 2 years ago in the evening. It was a great course and Seantel is SUPER nice! I highly recommend it.

When I want to try something new with my camera, I use YouTube. Endless amount of info. Just yesterday I wanted to set my Nikon SB800 to remote. Quick search and done.

All excellent suggestions. One other is Thom Hogan (Google him). He is a pro photographer that prepares excellent guidebooks/user manuals for Nikon digital SLR cameras.

Are you interested in your partner learning about the new camera or photography? There are oodles of excellent books on the the features and functions of the D7000 but photography is the art of using the camera to come up with compelling images (proper framing, exposure, composition and focus/selective focus).

Samy's has classes but you have to go to the LA or Glendale stores and they tend to be expensive. City College offers Certificate and Associate of Arts Degree programs in photography but those take time.

Or on YouTube look up AdoramaTV and checkout the entire Photography 1 on 1 series - in 15 minute segments professional photographer Mark Wallace explains the basics so you can go out and practise, practise, practise.

The question was about the Nikon D7000, learning about that specific camera. City College does not have such courses; there are photography classes on the main campus, but not targeted towards one camera model. There are no adult ed classes targeted towards the D7000 or any other specific camera. I don't think there are any photography classes there.

Samy's has classes on Canons and Nikons and may well have one on the D7000, but they are expensive. Brooks also - and I don't think they have classes on one specific camera model. Maybe there is someone at the camera club who has that camera, but if not books or probably YouTube are the best possibilities. (I have such a camera; it's not hard to learn but the best and imho the only way to learn everything it can do is take many, many pictures, discarding most of them.)

Thank you, one and all for all the excellent suggestions! I looked up Samy's camera online and found a class for the Nikon D7000 today!! It was only $29. We signed up for a field trip to Solvang, next month, too. Brooks has some workshops that we might be looking into. Again, thank you, everyone. Also, thank you Edhat for being here!!
