Any bakery should have items for diabetics, whether they should really be eating them is another story.

I have actually found some at Vons in Goleta, they have pies and a few of the dessert breads as well. Also, Simply Pies on Hollister I believe has no-sugar pies.

Yay for judgmental EdHat posters! First off, diabetics can eat anything that "normal" people can eat. They just need to be more careful of their portions and to combine "bad stuff" with an appropriate amount of exercise. Most "careful" diabetics I know forego sweets because they want to indulge in other ways, for example, a glass of wine with a special dinner or a larger cut of steak. That said, many diabetics do rely on artificial sweeteners. The problem with those, as many find out, is that most of them either taste like crap, they don't behave as sugar does, or they're another kind of carb and nearly as bad as regular sucrose. Also? You're asking for a special item. Generally speaking it is easier to obtain special items from vendors with advance notice. Today I think your chance of obtaining what you want is near zero. Had you asked two days ago, you could've been assured success.

Thanks 312. You said it all better than I could have. My other really pet peeve is being told that ALL type 2 diabetics are obese and just need to loose weight. Well, it runs in my family and I have never been over weight let alone obese and I have been a type 2 non-insulin dependent diabetic for over 10 years.

Dear Concern Trolls, Diabetes comes in two forms, Type 1 and 2, neither of which you "give yourself" through diet or weight related factors alone. Type 2 needs the genes present first and any one of us can get it, regardless of how fit or slim or heavy we are....if we have the genes. So, not every heavy person has or will get it and not every person who is slim or exercises will avoid it. As for treats, diabetics can enjoy an occasional treat of any kind, as long as they have their blood sugar under good control and don't eat sugary or carby foods too often. Fruit sugars can be no more or less harmful than regular sugar, it depends on the person and how their body responds. Some people have insulin spikes from so-called non-sugar containing artificial sweeteners. So before y'all go giving advice about diabetes and what diabetics should or shouldn't eat, please at least have some compassion and a general idea of what you're talking about! ;)

Per the CrushCakes website they can make cupcakes sugerfree by request so give them a call and see what they can come up with. Don’t mind the Trolls, if they didn’t have an anonymous format to spew on, nobody would listen to them.

Crushcakes has sugar free cupcakes and cakes, also try The Natural, you may not get a whole cake, but I think they do carry sugar free desserts. Happy Anniversary to your parents!

OP here: Thanks to those who offered helpful suggestions. I didn't mean to have it turn into a forum on diabetes, but I hope it was educational. I wasn't thinking about getting a whole cake. Just something small and tasty that my dad can partake in with my mom. Wonder if Gelson's bakery might have something. I think Renaud's just took over the space.

OP - a post with specifics might have been a better choice here, and you would have probably received more thoughtful and to-the-point answers. "Where" isn't your question, as that suggests geography - "What local bakeries" is more to the point. Also, "bakeries" also generally make bread products - for example, I had no idea you were specifically looking for a dessert. Hope you find a place to work with to give your folks a special treat!

I have seen small sugarfree cakes at Ralph's. (The palatial one on Chapala) . We used to get them for my in laws. The "sugar free" pies are usually sweetened with apple juice concentrate so they are no lower in carbs. Personally for a rare treat, I'd just get something real that they really enjoy, and serve small portions after a nice meal, so the blood sugar doesn't skyrocket.

The bakery at Ralphs on Carrillo has an assortment of sugar-free cookies, muffins, and turnovers. I also found sugar-free "one-bite" cupcakes at the Ralphs in Magnolia. If you find anything fabulous, please let us know!
