Replacement Taste

I had a craving for a Hercules Flip the other day. Since Kayser's has not been around for years, has anyone found anything with a similar flavor, or will my tongue never taste something like that again?

I went to that health food store on calle real (fairview area) and they had a shake very familiar to the kayser flips! Although I don't make it out to Goleta much so I am not sure if that place is still around.

The health food store in Carpinteria (Pacific Health Foods on Linden) claims to have bought the Kayser Flip recipe. Tried one - they're not quite what I remember, but they're still pretty good.

@593 Do you know the name of the store?

Pretty sure it was Pacific HF in Goleta, not there anymore.

The closest I have come is an Orange Banana, "go soy" with brewers yeast and calcium at Blenders... Still not quite the same but a very similar taste for me!

Can't recall what was in the 'Hercules', I was always fond of the Monkey flip, of which a close cousin is 'the peanut butter' at Blenders...even better, on the secret menu is the 'betterfinger'....a healthier butterfinger...mmmmm....darn, now I want one!

Hercules Flip = skim milk, a raw egg and ice milk. It comes in vanilla, chocolate, carob or mocha. The main ingredient is a mix of nonfat milk powder, defatted soy powder and defatted egg.

Wow, I must really have my flips confused; I was thinking Hercules was the one w/lime sherbert.

Seems like there's lots of sugar in the Orange Banana?

It would be nice if people posted complete questions with details, other than the 'locals only' approach of asking a question which many of us cannot follow without more info. And no, I am not the type that clicks on comments Before clicking and reading the full question. And thank you for the last comment explaining what the OP should have.. Anyway have a nice day everyone, and enjoy your regular milkshake plus raw egg. Sounds easy to recreate... Minus the suggestions for orange, banana, peanut butter, or butterfingers... I do love Blenders and McConnells and Pacific Health foods..

From the NYTimes 1989....a little flashback...

IN this bastion of lithe bodies and sybaritic tastes, the Hercules Flip is as much a part of life as Highway 101: Santa Barbarans can't get through the day without it.

The Flip is a thick, filling shake, consisting of Hercules Flip Mix, skim milk, a raw egg and ice milk. It comes in vanilla, chocolate, carob or mocha. The main ingredient is a mix of nonfat milk powder, defatted soy powder and defatted egg. It is high in protein - 37 grams per 14-ounce serving. The powder's manufacturer, Kaysers Health Bars, based in Santa Barbara, boasts that it meets 75 percent of the United States Recommended Daily Allowance for protein.

The Flip was created by Edwin Kayser, a nutritionist who founded Kaysers Health Bars and Stores Inc. Kayser health-food stores and bars have been an institution in Santa Barbara and Ventura for 39 years.

The smoothie with lime sherbert and pineapple juice was called Hawaiian Eye. Their frappes were super yummy too. Unfortunately when PCH took over the smoothies never seemed to be as good at the original Kayser's.

If anyone knows where Steve the brilliant manager of Kaysers who could answer any and every nutritional question is, I bet he would know where to get some of the Flip mix. I don't think we would be able to duplicate it without the specially formulated mix.

Boy, I miss that store and Steve and those flips!!

Oh I loved those flips! I worked there for years and have never seen a line at Blenders like the lines we used to have there! They had a special ice milk that they used too that added to the flavor. mmmmmmmmmm sounds so yummy , even on a cold day :)

I do a lot of hiking with the Sierra Club. Back in the day no hike was complete without a stop at Keysers. Felt like a very healthy thing to do. Now we stop for a Buffalo Burger at the Deer Lodge or a Tri-tip sandwich at Cold Springs with a beer or too. Not quite so healthy but after a long hike we feel we earned it. Still, Keysers was the spot.

The last time I was in Keysers I saw my reflection in the back mirror out of the corner of my eye and jumped about 3 feet. I scared the hell out of myself.

I never had a Hercules Flip. I was afraid of the raw egg. I did like the Hawaiian Eye and the Raspberry Buttermilk. Oh wow, was that good. Never have had anything quite as good as the buttermilk flips they made.

What amazed me about Kaisers being a "health food" store was after research indicated raw eggs often pass along saminella (sp?) they continued to add them to flips unless the customer asked it be deleted. Didn't seem safe or sensible to me.

Mmmm...salmonella shakes. Love em. No wonder they went out of business.

You are farrrr more likely to get salmonella from lettuce than a raw egg. Raw eggs are far less sketch than most think.

FLICKA there are a gazillion ways to get salmonella but it helps to understand where it comes from and how it gets around before being paralyzed with fear of it.

896, I'm not paralyzed by fear of salmonella but realize we have to be cautious with our food. When I was a professional cook I was required to take a "Make it Safe, Keep it Safe!" class from the University of California Cooperative Extension and they asked we pass along food safety tips. Many people think they have the flu when it is food that made them ill.

Oh man, I'm time-tripping! Kaisers Hercules Flip, I haven't had one in a million years, but used to live on them. Now I do Blenders and get a lot of supplements, etc... It's a good substitution.
