I am looking for a place in the county that will shred/destroy old documents for me. I cleaned out a few years of old bills/tax returns etc and I don't want to throw them in the trash due to privacy concerns. Any recommendations?

I don't know how much stuff you have, but OfficeMax does it by the pound. Not sure how much $$ per pound though, maybe $.79?

You can buy a cross-cut shredder for $25 and micro-cut for $80. Either way, you can shred your own stuff in a few minutes without having to trust someone else to do it right and you can use the shredder whenever you want. Some things really don't need to be out sourced.

Community West Bank in Goleta has two free shredding events every year -- one in the spring and one in the fall. I took care of decades' worth of old bills and tax returns in just two visits.

Pack and Post at the top of State St. They charge by the pound. I have taken several boxes in.

Just buy a shredder and do it yourself. It a lot of documents go somewhere like a bank where there are trusted employees. I wouldn't go to Pack and Post, no privacy and all it takes is one worker taking a document and compromising you. Pack and post is good for exactly what their name says. What I did was buy a shredder and hired a college kid to do the shredding, a little more expensive and time consuming, but he was in my office and I felt more comfortable.

David Ashley at Complete Document Destruction & Recycling has shredded my stuff twice over the years. He has a mobile truck which can either go to your place or meet up with you. The big advantage, to me, is that I can watch the shredding. His cell: 680-1707.

Unsolicited free advice: Don't shred your old tax returns. After 7 years you can shred all of the supporting documentation (paid bills, bank statements, etc.) but ALL of your old returns should go in a safe, permanent file. It's fine to scan them (and permanently save on CD/DVD) & THEN you can destroy the printed copy if you want to clear out the paper.

When I worked at ucsb, we used a company called shred x. This was a much bigger operation though, as they had a minimum to shred (generally 20+ xerox boxes worth). I'd invest in a quality shredder, I use mine for personal info all the time.

Just after tax time (April 15th) Community West Bank in Goleta will host a free shredding event. SBB&T may try to copy them, but, no doubt they'll be after your personal info. to try and open new accounts.

Buy a shredder, I wouldn't trust that stuff in anyone else's hands.

I have a personal shredder, but find the OfficeMax service much easier and less time consuming. It costs me about the same amount as a cup of coffee each year, so well worth it to me. I'd use one of the free bank shredding days, but I don't have an account with any of the ones mentioned.

I swear we've had this recommendation thread here on Edhat previously. Yup, Oct 2011. Edhat Staff - do you rotate in "new" recommendation threads when you feel the last request has happened after a certain length of time? Why not just keep them on the Referrals link?
