I am looking for a really good hand surgeon. I live in Santa Barbara but will travel to Ventura, LA or beyond for an excellent referral.
Much appreciation for a recommendation.

Gary Crawford has retired and is living the good life in Montana... I found this out last summer when I tried to see him. Dr. Behrman is part of that office and, while I did NOT need surgery, he treated my hand well, and I would return to him should I need surgery. I have no experience with Montgomery or Phelps. I agree that Dr. Crawford was just wonderful... but we all deserve that good retirement when we get a chance to take it.

Montgomery is a great surgeon, but has an awful bedside manner. However, personality has nothing to do with excellence in surgery.

Montgomery did a brilliant job repairing a torn tendon in my hand about 5 years ago. I've never had a problem with it since. I found him to be very professional.

Too bad Dr. Crawford is gone -- he did my hand back in the 1980's and it's been wonderful ever since!

When I crushed my hand 20+ years ago, 6 different doctors told me it was destroyed and should be fused in a natural position. Dennis Phelps fixed it properly and to this day, my predominant hand is working fine. Thanks Mr. Phelps!!

I also suggest Dr Montgomerry! He fixed my tendon, and 2 nerves. And I never took physical therapy, and my finger feels like before my accident! He did an excellent job!

Behrman, operated on my wrist to remove a cyst, also did surgery another time for carpal tunnel & nerve damage. He is located in SB and is an amazing surgeon, I heard that he was the best and I believe it. His bedside manner is a little cold but who cares.

If your problem is a tight tendon anchoring a finger, scar tissue or carpal tunnel, check to see if you could possibly be helped without surgery at all. Mary Wright has helped other people heading for surgery. advancedpainsolutions.org, here in SB.

I second Drs Montgomery and Behrman! Dr Montgomery has performed 3 wrist surgeries on me. Dr Behrman did 2 to repair my finger which was torn off by a cat. Both doctors are incredible and the surgical staff at the surgery center are just as wonderful.

Dr. Montgomery will go the extra mile. My 5 year old daughter required surgery after an accident occurred one late afternoon in Santa Ynez. He met us at the hospital (St. Francis) that same evening and did the surgery at midnight so we did not have to spend an extra night in the hospital. He has great skills, very kind and professional.

Dr. Jessica Brown no way. Wouldn't let Behrman operate on my dead dog. His patients have a very high rate of infection post sugery. Dr. Dennis Phelps is the best.

Jessica Brown repaired my severed left ulnar collateral ligament a couple of years ago - she seems to have done a good job by my experience. Thumb works fine, good support, bump is gone, small scar you wouldn't notice unless I pointed it out.

Robert Ruth, MD hands down. OH! Hahaha! One block around corner from SB Cottage hospital, on De la Vina and Nopal. Nicest family man/Dr you'll ever meet. Two of our son's required emergency hand surgery and we were lucky to have him do the work. Meticulous, very nice, polite and caring. Wants you to feel comfortable. He's your man!

@ 593 I am a veterinary technician in town and a patient degloved my little finger. Been in this profession for 16 years and had never been bitten! This was a Friday afternoon and was treated incorrectly at a local urgent care. By Monday am my finger was so badly damaged and painful my General sent me to Dr Behrman immediately. He preformed surgery within an hour so I would not lose my finger! Had to leave it partially open and have surgery #2 a week later. Have some nerve damage but still have most of my finger!! Thank god for Dr Behrman and everyone at the associated hand surgeons!
