updated: Jan 16, 2012, 2:01 PM

I am getting into astronomy and would like to have some suggestions of local clubs that get together.

The local club is the Astronomical Unit (www.sbau.org), sponsored by the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. There is a club up at Vandenberg that is less active (website seems dead), and in SLO, the Central Coast Astronomical Society (www.centralcoastastronomy.org).

You can find clubs/activities near you, wherever you are, at the Night Sky Network(nightsky.jpl.nasa.gov).

The AU meets in Farrand Hall at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History on the first Friday of each month from Sep through May, and has at least three public star parties each month, and puts them on the Edhat Events calendar.

Contact sbau.org This is the web site for the Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit, named one of the best astronomy clubs in the world. It is affiliated with the SB Museum of Natural History. I think you would enjoy this club.

Fred Marshak teaches a great astronomy class at SBCC that you might enjoy and they also have an astronomy club if you are a student or past student.

The local Astronomical Unit is stellar! They do a incredible job getting people knowlegeable about the heavens--all as volunteers. Plus they're funny.

I went to an event at the Goleta library. Some of the SBAU folks had telescopes hooked up to laptops so you could see really close up.

The Au is awesome. They come out to the Camino Real Marketplace every month to teach people about astrology. they are the nicest group of people and seem to love what they do. This month will be on the 4th. Tuesday, they set up around 7 and stay until everyone has had their fill.
