Scanner Reports 1-11-12

By Roger the Scanner Guy
Wednesday-Wednesday, the 11th of January 2012. All the same crimes that were going on the otter
day are still going on today. People have been arrested but most have probably been released by now. I'm SNOT a hundred percent sure on that but it seems
so. They don't always tell you the boggers gonna be released either, of course you can't expect them to know everything. I called the cops on a prowler
once. I think they just took him to the station and gave him a ticket for trespassing. The guy was back a couple hours later sleeping in the yard. I went over
to Circle K, did some panhandling, bought some booze and joined him out there. You can't beat them, join them. Rent is cheaper.
Guy told me the other day "I ain't gonna pay no 800 a month for a room!" When I first got here 30 some odd years ago now...Boy
am I old!!! I rented a tiny little room behind the Upham Hotel for 265.00 a month. I wonder how much it is now. I made 4.50 cents an hour back then too.
When I went into Newhouse it was 48.50 per week room and board. I never made much money but it was pretty equal back then and worth it. I don't think I
could handle paying 1500 a month rent now. You know though, rent is getting expensive everywhere. I still remember one of the first places I almost moved
into. It was on Stateline in Calumet City Illinois. It was a room in this old brick rooming house so old it had a faded Falstaf Beer advertisement painted on its
side. The room had its own entrance in back like the others. It was blue where there were not holes in the wall. A single light bulb hung from the ceiling so
low one night I knew I'd break it one drunken way or another. There was one of those steel beds with a headboard of bars like jail. There was a bloody
mattress on top with big black bugs on it. I don't know what kind they were a type of beetle. If you worked in a cemetery like I did they were referred to as
body bugs because that is what they ate. All this for 50 Bucks a month. My mother whom I was staying with at the time and who was holding my money so I
wouldn't blow it on booze did not approve of this place. In fact she just about threw up when she saw the blood and the body bugs on the mattress.
It wasn't too long after that I found a nice studio apartment for 150.00 a month. Ironically, across the street from Oak Hill
Cemetery where I worked at the time. I made 5.00 bucks an hour back then as a caretaker in the cemetery 150.00 a month wasn't too much to pay. Back
then you could find a vehicle most commonly referred to as a beater for 200 Bucks. That same beater would go about 2 grand today, along with that room
which would be more like 600 a month, deposit another 600. I don't recall people asking much for a deposit in the old days...I miss those days everything
was cheap, even love.
