A married couple from Bakersfield is in the Santa Barbara County Jail after Santa Barbara Sheriff's deputies arrested them for passing counterfeit one hundred dollar bills in Solvang.

At approximately 2:16pm on Monday, January 9, 2012, Sheriff's deputies working in the city of Solvang responded to a report that a man had just attempted to pass a forged one-hundred dollar bill at a business on the 1600 block of Copenhagen Drive.

The reporting person was able to provide an excellent description of the suspect, which assisted deputies to quickly locate and detain Paul Anthony Gonzales (DOB 5/22/76) near the intersection of Alisal Road and Mission Drive. Deputies also contacted Mindy Michelle Gonzales (DOB 7/31/83) not far from where her husband was originally detained.

The investigation revealed that the suspects had attempted to pass the fraudulent bill at a retailer, but quickly left after the clerk determined that the bill was bogus. However, the couple did succeed in passing several forged one-hundred dollar bills at neighboring businesses.

A search of the couple's rental car revealed that the suspects were in possession of an additional forged one-hundred dollar bill; approximately $2600.00 in legitimate U.S. currency; marijuana; methamphetamine; narcotics paraphernalia; prescription medications without a prescription and a stolen GLOCK .40 caliber automatic pistol.

Mr. and Mrs. Gonzales were booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail for a host of violations, including criminal conspiracy (182 PC), burglary (459 PC), counterfeiting (476 PC), and being under the influence of a controlled substance (11550(A) H&S). Mr. Gonzales was also booked for possession, of a controlled substance for sale (11378 H&S), possession of a controlled substance (11377(A) H&S), possession of controlled substance paraphernalia (11364 H&S), and felony gun charges (25800 PC & 29800(A) PC ) with bail set at $35,000. Bail for Mrs. Gonzales is set at $20,000.
