Car Rental
updated: Jan 09, 2012, 2:45 PM
We have friends from Vermont that will be renting a cottage in Carpenteria for 6
weeks. They are hoping to find an inexpensive car rental for while they are
here...any suggestions other then the usual chain agencies? They would like to
start next week but, our flexible.

Try the guy that hangs out in the Lorretto Plaza parking lot.

I often use Priceline.com and set my own price to see what might be cheapest when I travel; it might be helpful here. Otherwise, I agree -- Enterprise is a good choice. There's one on upper State.

Go to the airport counter where there are multiple rental companies and rent from whoever offers the best price -- it's a highly competetive industry, especially when the competition is standing right next to you.

There is also a company called "Rent-A-Wreck" Reasonable prices and don't let the name fool you.

Enterprise on upper State stinks. They tell their customers to park in surrounding residential area when they have PLENTY of spaces of their own on their own lot, or on State street down by where the bums park their motor homes (by McKenzie Park). Counter staff there is also rude.

I travel a lot for work and find that the airport locations are often more expensive than the off site locations due to taxes/fees and demand, even if they are owned by the same franchaise. I use the Avis on Monticito street and Sue and Clancy are great to deal with and they will work with you. For a 6 week rental I would call each of the local agencies and price it out. It is off season so you should not have a problem finding a deal.

Sue at the Avis location on Montecito Street is great. She is smart, efficient and always very helpful. I always use that Avis location. See you soon Sue!

I've rented cars at the Montecito St Avis also--Sue is the best! I suspect that renting away from the airport might be cheaper, but I don't know for sure...worth checking.

I recommend Hertz Local Edition - it's on the corner of Fairview and Olney - rates are reasonable and the folks there are very nice.

We rented one away from the airport in Portland Oregon once to save money, they were supposed to be close. Turned out to be a time consuming nightmare as they were way far from the airport - by city bus. Next time we were happy to pay the extra airport fee - it seemed small given the time and hassle it saved us. But your friends are lucky because they have you to get them to an off-airport location. :)

I second priceline. I'm scared to use them for flights and hotels because you're stuck with what they give you, but a car is a car. We just got back from a wedding in Tahoe. Our rental was $10 a day; others paid as much as $60 for a similar car.

I second the suggestion re: don't get the rental at the airport. Definitely more expensive. I have used enterprise downtown location on chapala as well as upper state, also have used priceline out of state and got a GREAT rate ... Shop around!!!

Sue at the Avis Car Rental near the Rhino and ABS is helpful, sweet and often home to good deals - 805 965-1079. Her birthday is this week - wish her a good one. Sometimes we rent from Sue and drive the car to LAX for less than you'd imagine. She's given comfy cars to upgrade my 94 yr. old Mom's trips out of town.

I have to chime in for Sue at Avis downtown. Cheerful and friendly even when lots of people are clamoring at the counter. Booking online might save $.

Yet another vote for Sue's Avis on Montecito! She takes great care of her regulars; it's such a breath of fresh air in an industry that sometimes has not-so-great customer service.

I vote for Hertz at Fess Parkers, half the cost of the airport & we got just what we wanted.
