Santa Barbara enjoys a lot of International tourists. The University draws in the long-term visitors who join our economy while boosting our brain-power. Ever wonder where they come from? The Geography Department's newest PhD, Indy Hurt, put them on a map.

That's pretty cool. I' surprised though that there are so few Canadians. It's so close to the US and it's an affluent country. I would have expected more Canadians would be in school here.

Has nothing to do with seeking diversity. Has everything to do with the mega dollars that the UC can charge international students (especially the wealthy ones from targeted countries) for tuition and fees. Believe me: it's part of a strategic plan. Nothing wrong with more money coming into the state's depleted coffers, _but_ California kids (whose education in theory is the UC's primary mission) are being shortchanged and this will become increasingly the case. No personal ax to grind. My kid's going to an out-of-state private school on a scholarship.
