updated: Jan 07, 2012, 12:01 PM
I am looking for referrals for someone who is good and creative at fur
alterations. Not wanting to wear a fur coat, I want to make it into a throw.

Do you want it altered back in to a living animal? That would be best.

We have been using animal parts for 150k+ years, and it is decidedly green, unlike petro-pleather. I do not condone factory farming of animals, but the poster is trying to re-purpose an existing object, let's not attack. Sorry I do not know who could make a throw from it, but you might be able to donate it to an organization that sends them to very cold places, where such clothing is both life saving and appreciated.

Personally, I don't wear/buy fur, but I find this sort of uber-emphasis on animals and the attendant scolding by the animal "guardian" types here beyond tedious. I find that I check in here less and less.

Mr Milton was our only furrier in town. I would check with Nordstrom or Saks for a referral. I don't condone the wearing of fur either, but I do agree with most of what CHANNELFOG is saying. There are parts of the world (Arctic regions) that utilize the whole animal for multiple purposes and rely on them for their very survival...that makes sense to me. For the rest of us in the lower 48, fur is unnecessary, we have Patagonia to keep us warm. ;-)

When a friend of ours died, we found furs in her closet, furs that she had probably inherited herself. We sent them to the Coats for Cubs headquarters. Here is an e-mail received from that organization (their web site also gives great information) : "We operate a program called Coats for Cubs which sounds like it would be the perfect use for your unwanted fur. If you donate the fur to us, we send it out to wildlife rehabilitators around the country who use the fur to warm and comfort orphaned and injured wildlife -- thus giving the fur back to the animals. Updated details and more information on the program and claiming a tax deduction is at www.coatsforcubs.org . Donating is easy. Simply pack up the fur in a sturdy box and mail to: The Humane Society of the United States 2100 L St. NW Washington, DC 20037 attn: Coats for Cubs If you want to receive a letter of thanks, please include a note inside the box stating your email address or your mailing address requesting an acknowledgement. If you've requested an acknowledgement, you will be sent a letter of thanks 2-3 weeks after the fur has arrived. Please save this letter if you want to claim a tax deduction. Please do not hesitate to call or email with further questions. As the one who asked, thank you for the helpful suggestions as yes, I did inherit and don't want to wear or waste the sacrifice of these innocent animals. The cruel responses only make it worse and hurtful.

It is unfortunate that a perfectly resonable request would bring the trolls out of their caves. Anonymity can encourage honest discussion or provide a forum for the weak and angry to have a voice. Dulce, don't let them get you down. DFTT(don't feed the trolls). Brief definition from Wiki below: In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory,[2]extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[4]

Anyone who eats hamburgers, chicken wings or hot dogs or wears a leather belt and scolds others for wearing fur is nothing more than a hypocrite. We can live without animal meat and fur and leather yet millions of people choose to do one and not the other and pretend that there is any difference. It's charming. Animals should be both eaten and worn, that's how the food and fashion chains work; end of story. If you don't like the fact that we are at the top of the food chain then make a sign and go protest the unfairness of evolution down on State St.

@113 Factory farmed meat for human consumption is one thing. Trapping and killing a wild animal for it's fur is quite another. I see a BIG difference.

147: The fact that you see a BIG difference between killing a cow in a pen for food and a fox in the wild for fur is mind-boggling to me. They are both animals killed for something they provide that is not necessary for us humans to survive. I've seen many healthy vegetarians and many fashionable folks wearing pleather. So please explain to me how killing a cow for food is OK but killing a mink for fur is unacceptable? Again, neither is REQUIRED for survival so how do you justify one over the other? Are you saying that an animal that is born in a pen deserves to die but an animal that roams freely should be protected under all circumstances? Your opinion stating that which side of a barbed wire fence you are born on determines the value of your life is odd quite odd to me.....
