Jolie, a 2-year-old poodle mix came into my life July 8, six weeks after the death of
Sadie, a rescued miniature poodle who was about 18 and whom I'd had for nine
years. I had planned on being dogless for a while, with great plans of traveling
hither and yon. However, five weeks later, I realized I needed a dog in my life more
than I needed the headaches of traveling. Searching petfinder.com and the local
rescue groups for a poodle or poodle-mix, I was captivated instantly by the look of
intelligence in this dog's eyes.
She was with Central Valley Railroad Rescue in Visalia and had been found
wandering a dusty back road just a couple of weeks before I saw her. She had no
tags, no chip, no collar and wasn't spayed. Advertising her as a lost-and-found dog
resulted in no response from a distraught owner, so they spayed her, microchipped
her and posted her on petfinder.com.
The rescue group had named her Jolie, and since Jolie Madame was my mother's
favorite perfume, I kept it. She's definitely a strong-willed beauty. I hadn't realized
she was part dachshund until I went to get her (fortunately, the group's director had
to be in Castaic, saving me the drive to Visalia), and the woman put her down. "She
has no legs!" I wailed jokingly. Well, of course she has legs; they're just short. It's
hard to know, but I think she may be a miniature poodle crossed with a dachshund,
and there may even be some schnauzer mixed in, so I tell people she's a new
designer dog, a schnoxie-poo.
Her coloring is 100% black and silver phantom poodle, a pattern I'd never heard
of, but if you google it, you'll find people breeding them, and apparently, they're
accepted for show in other parts of the world. The mask certainly enhances her
personality - she's all-character and I love her to bits! Just don't tell her she's a small
dog!
