updated: Jan 02, 2012, 8:00 PM

I have used toys and kids clothes that I would like to donate. Where can I take them?

I give my kids' outgrown items to either Transition House or Alpha Thrift.

If I were still in SB, I would say bring them to me and I would take them to Baja or other parts of Mexico. When I was back and forth often, I never went with an empty car or truck so I could bring things to the needy and the children.

But Toys and clothes can be used and reused so many times. There are many places to the needy. I hope you get some good leads.

Transition house, they actually go to people who need them, instead of other places that sell them for profit or are taken by employees. 428, I am glad you are not in SB, but sad you still reside in the States. Give them to Mexico, instead of US citizens? In Mexico those gifts are swiftly taken by parents and sold or traded. You are actually doing an inservice. I say take care of people in your homeland first.

My favorite is the Assistance Shop on Veronica Springs Road near Las Positas. Here's the link:

We are starting a new organization called United Communities and could use the donation for our yard sale coming up. I can pick up the things. 962-8415

@431... Your response to 428 was mean and out of line - how insulting!!

There is always the Goodwill on Carrillo and Bath. They take everything and serve the community well.

I totally agree about the Woman's Assistance League. They do very good work, and sell things at good prices, and in good condition. They keep their shop very clean, and staff it with volunteers. They are all VERY nice. I shop there all the time, and donate things there every time!

sbfreecycle is a yahoo group where you post what you are giving away, someone who needs it will come pick it up (or however you wish to arrange). Your stuff would stay in the community, and most likely be posted to sbfreecycle again when the new owner no longer needs the items. You may pick anyone that you want to give your stuff to, first come, most needy, etc. Just type sbfreecycle into your browser and it will probably be the first hit.

Another vote for Assistance League! They fund so many programs with the money earned at their thrift store.

Assistance League on Veronica Springs Rd. is the place to donate. They support 13 philanthropies in our community. It's a very clean thrift store staffed with wonderful volunteers.

Alpha Resource Center is a good charity that helps mentally disabled people. They have a collection center at their main location on Cathedral Oaks, and they also accept donations at their thrift store on Hollister. (They have two stores on Hollister in Old Town, but I believe they only accept donations at the one near Kellogg.)

Goodwill does not accept toys only clothes. Family Thrift in the shopping center with Woody's BBQ in Goleta at Walnut / Hollister will take anything. Donations are accepted only in the back.

476, I didn't mean to insult anyone and don't understand why people take things personal, it is an opinion. I say take care of people domestically before foreigners. Word of advise, if you don't like a persons opinion, don't take it personally, and back up why you don't like it. This site is meant to have different opinions, if you don't like them skip them and write something useful instead of calling someone out for how they feel without backing it up. Have a good one.

If you are in Santa Ynez Valley the New to You CH Aux or Humane Society Thrift Shop are both on Oak and Alisal in Solvang. Also People Helping People by New Frontiers. They are all good causes and really nice people.

Alpha Thrift (Magnolia) used to have a sign "not accepting donations today" so often that I stopped donating to them.

431, are you serious? We too donate slightly expired meds to small villages in Mexico. They dont have the resources to sell the goods they are given. They are lucky to have a bed! Kudo's to Comment # 428 for their kindness!

The Unity Shoppe. Their drop off is in the back basement in the public parking lot at Chapala and Victoria.
