I am in need of some new brakes for my Honda Civic. Can you please suggest some affordable places?

Thanks!

Buy the brakes yourself cheaply at O'Reilly or Napa. Then take them to somewhere cheap like Airport Motors and it should be less than an hour of labor. Costco is an option too.

I just got the brakes replaced on my Toyota Corolla at Top Shop in Goleta and it was $426.00. Not sure what "affordable" is, but this is what I paid.

Munoz Automotive 963-1121 on Salinas is a family owned local business and they are really nice. You know the work will be done correctly there. When I needed my civic struts replaced they quoted me $100 less than Big Brand Tires and they never go over their estimate. Give them a call and see what they can do for you. They only work on Hondas and Acuras so are experts on those cars.

That Honda guy in old town Goleta is also very good but I don't know how his prices compare.

I always recommend against taking your car to a mechanic for easy jobs, however Airport motors is the only place I would ever refer anyone to.

Go to Meineke only if you want to have them tell you everything else that is wrong with your car so they can fix it for you and charge you even though nothing else is wrong. I was told I needed new tie rods, but had them replaced a few years ago...so I took it to another person my son uses and he said Meineke is crazy that my tie rods look fine and they are known for trying to pull this kind of crap. I went there for an alignment after getting new tires. Left with an estimate for over $500....beware!

C&S Automotive on Upper State.

also, for the DIYers, OEM Honda (Nissin) pads are way better then anything you'll get on the cheap at O'Reillys/etc.

Ian's Tire on Hollister/State. I've been going to Ian since 1985. Your brakes are nothing to skimp on!

@Mommame, how long ago did you go to Meineke? Was this the one at State and 154 area? Jon, who bought the place a few years ago, seems like a pretty straight forward guy. The previous owners who had the shop before it became Meineke were slimy!!!

Jon has been working really hard to shake the other guy's nasty reputation. Just wondering if you were there before he took over.

I have not had any trouble with Jon and his guys.

I've been going to DiMauros (Robert) Honda on Dawson in Goleta for my Honda's for over 20 years. His company is the most thorough and prices are reasonable. 964-1032.

First, go to Fast Undercar (899-2555) on East Haley. Ask for Jaime or Harvey, they will sell you the parts you need to replace your brakes. (Bringing your own parts to a repair shop upsets them a little as they cannot sell you the marked up parts, but you will save a bundle.) Second, find a shop for the labor, I reccommend Sears (569-6728) or Nespors University Auto (968-9824) ask for Mike.

I have to agree with BullseyeB, John at Meineke is a great guy, straight shooter, very reasonable & hard worker who has worked on my BMW & Jag. He is wonderful, even told me once I should have SBAG do a repair on the BMW because they are the only ones who should work on the security system. Highly recommend!

I highly recommend you buy the break pads yourself and take it to the Auto classes at SBCC. I did it and was not charged a dime, it helped out students, and came out great. I would do it myself but don't have access to a hydrolic lift. Really where it gets expensive is them ordering the pads versus you, the labor, a job that takes an hour or so if uninterrupted, usually comes out to 3 hours labor. If that is too much and will cause a headache call Chris Beswick, used to work for Ford now works out of custom garage. Best secret in town price-wise.

Ricardo Topete (he used to own Economy Brake and Muffler in Goleta) now has a new Brake and Muffler shop called Atlas Muffler & Auto, and it is on Daley St. off of Fairview, near the airport (behind McLeans Auto). He specializes in brakes, has done excellent work on several of my cars in the past, and is very affordable.

Call him at 805-636-1361 and tell him "The Ripper" sent you. He'll give you a good deal.

Prestige Auto on Milpas. I always get my oil changed there. They are so incredibly honest and nice. They even top my fluids off and rotate my tires for free when I'm going on a road trip. I just got my brakes replaced there for $300. I think that's a pretty good deal.

I wouldn't go anywhere but DiMauro's Automotive. Rob is a Honda Specialist and has been taking care of our cars since 1988! I trust him completely, he and his mechanic Danny do impeccable work, and his prices are much lower than those at the dealership. If I had seven thumbs they would all be UP for DiMauro's.

Thumbs down for the Meineke on upper State St. Took my car to get a a general checkup/estimate for all the major systems. They tried to tell me I needed to replace a good/new part for $400 (and the estimate was about $125 more than i paid a month earlier to have the part replaced.) I know this is anecdotal evidence, just saying...

PLEASE!! Don't go to BRUCE@ Anacapa Mobile & don't let him come to you. I had an automotive experience involving Bruce and he is either highly incompetent or a shady crook. He told a customer of his (who intended to sell a car) that his/her car needed at least $800 in repairs to pass smog and the cars value was so low that he/she would lose money. Well this kindly, trusting person who had recently bought a new car decided to donate the car. Well guess who was willing to take it off her hands free of charge? That's right BRUCE!!!!
In the end the person donated the car to me. I took car to a 'smog test only' place. Car passed no probs, paid $70 for smog & $100 to DMV for transfer/tags. I SOLD THE CAR A MONTH LATER FOR $2,200. I often wonder if Bruce knew he could make a quick $2.000 or would have made $800 for repairs not needed.
