Brophy Brothers. My family is from New England and when they visit, they say Brophy's "chowda" is as close as their own back home.

Clementines in Carpinteria has a wonderful home made clam chowder. It is available as part of their dinners as they don't serve ala carte.

Brophy's is a hearty New England style chowder but is not as flavorful as many restaurants in New England like Mildred's in Hyannis, Mass. The best local chowder used to be at the seafood restaurant on Cabrillo Blvd. that is now a Pizza place.

Wife and I crave cc as well. Maryland/Va area...We tried all the restaurants in town and Brophys was pretty good, but not as "clammy" as we like. Also the line and crowds there are too much to deal with for a good chowda. We resorted to making our own with tons of clams and cream sherry and Tabasco ....nummmma

Brophy's, no question. Anyone ever put a little Tobasco in their chowda for a little spice? I do and it's great, but it makes my wife sick.

@885 and others re: the concept of Tabasco tells you the status of their taste. There's no place like home. Brophys is edible as are others but "second bowl" worthy?...again, there's no place like home and you'll be able to afford a whole pot instead of a bowl!

Brophy's is great if you like chewy clams (and being elbow to elbow with the table next to you) but if you like 'em soft and tender you should try Lazy Acres. For reals.

Splash in Pismo sells 1200 "Loaves" of chowder a day so they must be doing something right.

Long line to wait in though, ALWAYS!

The 'trick' is: Next time you're in San Luis Obispo, go to Costco. They have "Splash" chowder in the frozen fish section. 4 generous portions. Just hollow out your own small loaf of bread, heat n eat and ENJOY!

Breakwater at the harbor has tastier chowder than Brophy's and no waiting. My spouse highly recommends the bread bowl.

I do enjoy the clam chowder at Brophy's, but you must realize that their clam chowder is NOT made by them. Brophy's uses CANNED clam chowder. They may add an ingredient or two after opening the cans, but it is still CANNED. Tasty, but CANNED.

Coming from New England, this is clam chowder blasphemy.

In all honesty, in my 16+ years here in SB I have not had a bowl of clam chowder that comes close to "superior". "Above average" is the best I can give, and Brophy's is probably the best of the "above average" local clam chowders.
