I am considering bringing my 86-year-old dad to town for a hip replacement. I am looking for a referral for a doctor who does anterior hip replacement. I would be interested in hearing thoughts from people who have had this procedure.

Do Not - Do Not! - have a hip replacement done in Santa Barbara. Go to John Moreland in Santa Monica. At least do some research first as to most reknowned in this area of surgery.

Anterior Hip replacement is not necessarily better than a traditional posterior/lateral approach. The best orthopedic surgeon in town to do a hip or knee replacement is Dr Gallivan, 2324 Bath street, Santa Barbara.805-682-7801.

I would not have this surgery done in SB. Los Angeles or San Francisco, yes. I agree with 718.

Health care in Santa Barbara is 50% more expensive than LA. Are you rich?

Bradley performed two hip replacements for my mother within a 6 month period. The first one very successful. The second failed because he didn't glue it in properly and it was too small. 6 months of pain and all he said is she needed to walk more. At least 5 follow up appointments. Her hip collapsed on her one Sunday resulting in a 911 call and an ambulance trip to Cottage. I called Dr Peus Smith Birch Kahmann & Gallivan Orthopedic. They did a dye test one her and found it to be a fautly hip replacement. She had to have the hip completely replaced. Bradley's bedside manner is atrocious! It took him over a year to apologize for his lack of care for my mother. This was only after we inquired about the DePuy /Johnson & Johnson hip that has been recalled. http://www.depuy.com/asr-hip-replacement-recall Do you're homework. Anterior isn't necessarily the best incision for replacement.

Don't lock-in to the idea of the anterior approach. I had a very good outcome with James Zmolek in Santa Barbara, who goes in posteriorly. When asked why not the anterior approach, he told me 'I want to see what I'm doing.' Its a compelling point. The surgeon is important obviously, but shopping for the right follow-up crew is what I'd attend to also. Those first 10 days after surgery are critical. Having a team that can detect clotting and infection and act quickly on it is really quite important. We all might wish for more contact with and comfort from the surgeon, but they feel totally justified that they achieve the best outcome by maximizing the number of surgeries their team performs. While I appreciate that argument, I want experience, personal attentiveness, and follow-up.

Jim Zmolek did both of my hip replacements. He is a very good surgeon and has an excellent "bedside manner". I felt very comfortable with having him as my surgeon. And he's a snappy dresser, too! I also was VERY pleased with the post-op care I got at home from Community Health. The nursing care and physical therapy were top notch. I believe Community Health is now merging with Visiting Nurses and Hospice. We are really lucky to have such wonderful resources in our community.

I can recommend Dr. Steven Holstien; my hip replacement surgery done in Santa Barbara last October was completely successful, and the care given at Goleta Cottage Hospital was excellent also.

Bradley did my hip about 6 years ago. It went very well. I was out of the hospital the next day - my choice, not his! I used a walker for about a week, then crutches for a couple of weeks and then a cane. I flew back to work in Missouri a month after the surgery. I totally disagree with the opinion that the Anterior procedure is no better than the other, more traditional procedures. Surgeons do not like to try new methods in most cases. Not using the Anterior approach is like not using arthroscopic techniques when they are available. If you can avoid having to cut muscles and use less traumatic techniques, I don't think the choice is hard. Bradley is not a warm, fuzzy guy by any stretch. He falls into the common category of surgeons that I call Mechanics. You are a device that needs to be fixed and he is quite skilled at doing what is needed, but don't look for much beyond that.

Dr. Craviotto did a hip replacement for my mother-in-law years ago and she's had no trouble. I had a full knee replacement by him, as well, in June. Dr. Craviotto, Goleta Valley Hospital, and Hayashida & Associates Physical Therapy. Totally positive experience all the way through. Good luck!

Do yourself a favor and check whichever doctor you choose with the CA Medical Board online to see if any malpractice actions have been filed against him or her. I'm sorry, but Dr. Bradley has a malpractice judgment against him so I would not go to him. Dr. Daniel Craviotto did a hip replacement on my dad a couple years ago. (I believe anterior.) Very nice doctor, I highly recommend him. He's over by Goleta Cottage. 967-9311

There are some statements bordering on libel in these comments, as well as a wholesale indictment of the Santa Barbara orthopedic community. The best care for routine (not rare and exotic) conditions is frequently found in community hospitals in small cities. There are a lot of strong opinions out there but they should be backed by evidence.

Thomas G. Sampson M.D. in San Francisco and John Moreland M.D. in Santa Monica are 2 of the top people in the state for hip replacements. Check out their websites online for some insight. They specialize in hips rather than doing all kinds of different ortho surgeries...

I totally agree with 894. Dr. Bradley replaced my hip in 2007. I was walking two miles painlessly in two weeks. He was great for me, and has replaced both hips and both knees for a friend. Similar results.

The Joint Commission's Disease Specific Certification for Knee and Hip surgery ("Gold Seal of Approval") has been awarded to both Goleta and Santa Barbara Cottage hospitals. Both hospitals also earned the Aetna Institute of Quality award for knee and hip surgery. Both hospitals also earned the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Center of Distinction award for knee and hip surgery. Seems that these awards speak volumes about the quality. All surgery has risks - no surgery procedure is 100% risk free. One complication is one too many - and especially for the patient - but that itself is not reason to condemn either the surgeon or the hospital. And many surgeons have malpractice suits filed against them - the real issue is, if any of the suits are successful, and why.
