Puppy Socialization Class
updated: Dec 13, 2011, 9:42 AM
I am looking for a puppy socialization class or a puppy play group to bring my 13-14 week old Aussie to over the Christmas holidays. Tried Craigslist but struck out. Any help from Edhatters? Happy holidays!

Hurry because socialization starts at two months of age.

23, it starts at birth and it continues through adolescence and adulthood. Sounds like the poster is prioritizing it by asking for suggestions.

623 sounds like an advertising plug. I've not used Wency with any of my dogs, but that is because of reports from friends and others that her technique might be a bit "heavy-handed". (Again, just what I heard, nothing personal.) OP, I'd suggest that you attend a few of these classes for a few minutes without your pup so you can gauge the environment and/or methods for yourself and get some feedback from others in attendance.

Dioji is great, either classes or actual daycare so the pup gets to play with other dogs. I would NOT recommend camp canine. I adopted my dog from a local shelter and the owner of camp canine was on duty for free basic training lessons through the shelter and he hit my dog on the rump (hard) for not paying attention. That's not anything close to what you want your dog exposed to, particularly when you are trying to socialize a new puppy who is in that small window of ingrained behavior.

If you want to try the two local fenced dog parks, there's Kiwanis Meadows inside Tuckers Grove County Park. It's for dogs all day until the park closes. Tabano Hollow, nearby, is an off-leash dog park in the morning and from 3 p.m. until dark. Try to come early to both parks. After about 4 p.m., the parks start filling up with owners who've just gotten off work and dogs that are ready to rumble. It can get kinda rowdy.

I had Wency help me with 2 dogs and she's miraculous. I'm now looking for a teenage dog training class that isn't at 6pm. Anything out there?

Thanks for the suggestions, all! I have been waiting to get her with other doggies b/c of the Parvo risks, although she has been well-socialized to humans so far.

My little labradoodle went to classes at The Perfect Puppy Academy. Ann Swan, the teacher, was fabulous. Highly recommended
