Huh? So you want it pan fried or what?

Yeah...why? It's just a healthy (or unhealthy) pan fried.

I assumed the OP meant chicken fried steak, which is best when traditionally pan fried and the remaining oil and fond used to make a rich country gravy.

You mean "Chicken Fried Steak" and eggs?
.....Denny's....but I think it's always deep or pan fried.
Pan Fried probably more oil than food done in a deep fryer.

With sausage gravy and Bisquits....YEEE HAW!

Cold Springs Tavern has great, authentic, chicken fried steak and eggs. But only during their breakfast hours.

Chicken fried steak, I love chicken fried steak. The best chicken fried steak is fried and dipped in gravy. My ex friend from La ramada had and old friend named Lev who made the best chicken fried steak ever. In Santa Barbara I would go to Tupelo Junction. They have a very good chicken fried steak.

The best chicken fried steak (with no egg) I've had in SB is at Woody's Roundup at Earl Warren. It was actually the BEST I have in my life and I'm from Texas.

I was wondering if Farmer Boy was really any good, too.

Farmer Boy is great. I really like the freshly made sausage.

Farmer Boy is not good at all. Probably one of the worst breakfast spots in all of SB. Yes, they do make their own sausage patties, but they are incredibly bland. They also serve that nasty guacamole that comes out of a bag with a lemony flavor, totally inexcusable in a place like SB. To top it off the place has some sort of rotten odor permeating the dining area a lot of the time. Anyone who thinks this place is good likely doesn't eat out much, much better tasty options in this town.

Jake's on de la Vina did a good Chicken Fried Steak. I miss going there and miss Jake, too.

Mike's Place, also on de la Vina, has a Chicken Fried Steak that can be pretty good depending on who is cooking.

The best chicken fried steak hands down can bee found at Cody's. They use tri-tip and it is fork tender no knife needed. Our family has had it everywhere and no other place can even hold a candle to Cody's.

The chicken-fried steak they serve at Pappy's Restaurant off the freeway in Santa Maria [Blosser Road offramp? - not 100% sure] is pretty good, too...

Yes, both Cody's and the Mesa Cafe (same owner / menu) have chicken fried steak, but don't expect to go there twice and get the same quality meal. One day it will be OK and the next it will be crap. I have never seen a restaurant whose menu is that stable have food quality that is so unstable. The other night I went to Mesa Cafe and got a french dip sandwich. The meat was cut over 1/4" thick. You could hardly bite off a piece. Inedible.

My recommendation is to pass on Cody's / Mesa Cafe if you are looking for good chicken fried steak.

@238937 I unfortunately agree with you. We live nearby and eat their regularly. Sometimes it is so good, eggs perfect, hash and hasbhrown crispy, etc. Really good. Then the next time barely edible. Very frustrating. Sounds like somebody in the kitchen needs to get the das boot.

92P sadly Woody's Roundup is no more - at least for now. I know the owner they were doing fine but there was issues with the Showgrounds so they closed. They may eventually open another location..maybe DT.

I really like the CFS at Mulligans's. At the public golf course on McCaw. Not greasy or fatty. Definitely not gourmet but a great value. You can order a Senior size or else you get a very large delicious cut of meat. I would be very surprised if you don't like it. YUMMERS!!!!! Now I have to go today for breakfast. CFS with over easy eggs....Be still my heart.

Cody's and the MSG Cafe..? I agree went to Cody's for breakfast and it was fine, went a month later and it was so bad I will never return...probably the leering dudes cooking in the entryway weren't focused on cooking. MSG makes food tasty but your clientele may not be able to come back.

SBALAX.... Jake's was awesome, when he first opened, but it's been closed over a year now.... greedy landlord prefered an empty building to a reduced rent until the economy picked up.

Esau's is good, but I couldn't tell you if it was pan fried or deep fried. I had one at Mike's on De La Vina and it was the toughest gristliest piece of meat ever and it tasted of old oil.
