Scanner Report 12-5-11
updated: Dec 05, 2011, 7:00 AM

By Roger the Scanner Guy

Will hair we are another Monday-Monday, and twenty more Shoplifting Daze to Christmas. I hope people are offended that I call Christmas, Christmas. That is what I've always called it. But Happy Holidays anyway. I take Roger Junior in on Tuesday Morning for his surgery. Last week it got screwed up, because a nurse told me he couldn't have water after midnight not just food. Later on, the doctor told me water after midnight is ok. I'm more of a hypochondriac over the little SNOT than I am myself.

I was riding my bicycle totally legal on Milpas Sunday morning when some young 20 year old kid pulled out in front of me. I almost broadsided her, her car woulda been hurtin'! When she smiled at me like just about every pretty girl thinks their pretty little smiles makes everything ok, I said to her "Occupy your brain" and kept going almost into the side of the car. That woulda SUCKED, after saying that to her.

They say this time of the year is when people get most depressed and commit suicide or attempt it. I'm not so sure anymore because I hear suicides and attempts on a pretty steady basis on the scanner the past couple of years. Since people started losing their homes, vehicles, jobs; more so since the economy dived. Still it surprises me because we are in no way in as bad shape as America was in back in 1929 in the real Depression. I wasn't even close to being born yet but I heard stories. My Grandparents did not lie much, at least not about the Great Depression. That was the year my Mother was born. I knew how they felt. In many places in our country no jobs were to be had, or food to be found.

At least now there are some shelters. It is similar when you consider that there are bread lines and food lines. They are somewhat long. People are digging out of dumpsters for food and cans. I heard the Sheriffs or possibly a fire department talking about tearing out homeless camps. When I heard that I had a vision of the police raiding the camps and beating the homeless to death. That happened many times during the great depression. Hobos were blackjacked, beaten, and ran outta towns as they searched for a place to live for their families, many of them. Some were single.

As long as I have been around, I have never seen so many homeless people in Santa Barbara and SNOT just the regulars. But married couples with kids too. People losing their homes, jobs still, although I hear losing jobs is down a little. I would think our generation is stronger now than in 1929, that suicide wouldn't be that much of an option. But then again there are different reasons for suicide. I wonder how many are really tied to the economy.
