2011 Santa Hat Count
updated: Dec 03, 2011, 7:58 PM
The dedicated staff is hat it again, counting Santa caps at the annual holiday parade on State Street. Though there was only one Santa in the parade, many wore the jolly red hat in spirit of the season. And we were there to count every single one of them.
We made our way down the crowd-lined sidewalks, found a perfect viewing spot, and got our thumbs ready for some clickin'. Marching bands, fire trucks, City Council, local dancers, clubs, and organizations passed by, some wearing the traditional hat worthy of click and others dressed in their best holiday dreamer costumes.
One hour went by and the number surpassed 600, but we knew the end was not in sight. Still to come, more creative floats, a mob of karate kids all wearing blinking Santa hats (talk about some challenging counting), and finally the one and only, Mr. Santa Claus. Led by his team of human reindeers, Santa passed us by, wishing us Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. With those good tidings in mind, we looked down at the counter to see the final tally: 1,123.
Yup, 1-1-2-3. Not as many as 2006 or 2010, but 1,123 is happy to reside in third place for now. And just as easy as 123, Edhat concludes our counting adventures for 2011. Check out the numbers on the graph below. As always, Santa hats proved to be the biggest hit of year.
