Weekend Destination
updated: Nov 28, 2011, 1:53 PM

I have about 12 friends coming into town for a birthday party. We were going to stay up north in cabins but I just got a call telling me they have to close down for Dec. Does anyone have any good ideas for a group to go for a weekend locally that won't break the bank?

Many of the locals here enjoy camping out around the library, there's a water fountain available for bathing, and it's all FREE!!!

Enjoy your stay in Santa Barbara, "The American Riviera"

I'll second El Capitan Canyon, since I just got back from 3 days there with family for Thanksgiving. They are definitely pricier than the cabins and yurts you can reserve at Jalama and Lake Cachuma, but they are SO much nicer. There are cabins with their own bathrooms, but if you want to save some dough you can rent canvas tent-cabins that are set up on a wood platform and have regular beds, heaters, electricity and are generally fine even when the temperature dips this time of year. There are very clean bathrooms and hot showers near your site. Plus they have 2 heated pools, a creek my son loved to play in, and some fantastic hiking trails. I think you can get a decent discount this time of year if you have a big group. Oh and El Capitan State Park is across the road in case you want to fish, beachcomb or look through tidepools. Its only 20 minutes north of town but it was a great little vacation.

If you are looking for a hotel in town instead of camping, our family has stayed at the Marina Beach Inn. Family owned and 1/2 block from the beach. Continental Breakfast is included and they also have bikes you can use.

Look up the Milk and Honey Farm. They have a huge barn with a loft converted into open accomodations for groups. Has a kitchen and bathroom.

There's wonderful camping at the state beach in Carpinteria. Also, the Best Western there is pretty nice.

If you want a retreat, La Casa de Maria has plenty of affordable ones and the grounds are amazingly beautiful. The have facilities for a group your size, too.

Anacapa Island. No facilities and nothing to do once you get there, but you'll have no trouble getting reservations.

Cabrillo Inn at the Beach is right between the expensive hotels at East Beach, but charges way less. They have a great 3rd floor suite. And Victor is a cool guy, takes really good care of his guests.

When friends visited in April they rented a great house off of Portofino through SBRentals. Large kitchen, living room, and dining room; 5 bedrooms & 3 baths; heated pool and spa; patio and bbq set-up and great views. Don't know how much they paid but they split it three ways and thought it very reasonable. A fun way to have some privacy and yet spend time together.

Grab a tent and pitch it on the sunken lawn of the Court House. The Occupy Crowd will welcome you and if you don't shower, no one is going to care!

@285P, that Milk and Honey Farm seems charming. I had no idea it was there. If we decide to get married again, that seems like a sweet spot. I just want to go visit Charlemange.

"Come on over to my house." One gal once said to ...I think it was the Eagles after they played the bowl and most of the restaurants were closed downtown...and they did! Nice BBQ right there in her backyard. Hold out a little bit and someone just might invite you to their house!

Cachuma Cabins or Yurts. The lake is incredibly beautiful this time of year. There is an assembly hall you can rent for group dinners. Also there are several businesses that will deliver an RV (or two+) to you there or at El Capitan Canyon's RV park. They will even provision them for you.
