Scanner Report 11-21-11
updated: Nov 21, 2011, 7:00 AM

By Roger the Scanner Guy

I guess one can only pretend it's okay for so long before they go off their rocker, and say something that shocks otters so bad they have to seek therapy because they thought the person whose commentaries they read was DOG. I feel that way about Steve Lopez, and Ken Williams. Of course, if they were to get angry about something and fly off the handle with their words I'd wait to hear what else they had to say instead of pouncing on their heads condemning them as evil.

In Santa Barbara, if you're homeless or Hispanic, you're treated as second class by the general population. Actually, I think homeless people in Santa Barbara are treated far worse than anyone else. There may be homeless shelters and services all over town for them, but not all of them benefit. We play favorites here in Santa Barbara. If one is mentally ill or too physically disabled and cannot or will not conform to the rules, they are shoved gently out of the way.

I hear this every day several times on the scanner. But as people tell me, it happens everywhere not just in Santa Barbara, It's the way of the land the way of our new world. What a wonderful life for some but not all. Since it happens everywhere, that is supposed to somehow make it OK, or acceptable. Isn't it obvious to others that if one is mentally ill they cannot conform to rules because they do not understand rules? Isn't it obvious that the physically disabled cannot perform the duties that non-physically disabled people can? While some homeless shelters do not have the capacity to care for those who are seriously ill, many of the shelters benefit from government grants with the commitment to care for them.

If I had lived in a glass bubble all of my life like many people do; if I never experienced being abandoned as a child, raped as a child, beaten as a child; if I never experienced brain damage, then I would not know what it's like to be gently shoved out of the way. But I do know what it's like. I know what it's like to live on the street, to eat out of trash cans, to be refused services unless I give someone sex. It doesn't just happen to little girls, it happens to little boys too. I know what it's like to not be right in the head, disabled physically and mentally, so far gone I couldn't even tie my own shoes or comb my hair. I know what it's like to be taken advantage of and thrown away like a piece of scrap. When I see it done to others I get angry, real angry. Excuse me for being human.

These poor women out here on the street get raped all of the time. They get used and thrown away like a piece of garbage. They don't always report crimes done to them because I'm told they are not taken seriously by the police, or they are too afraid to report crimes. I don't know if they are not taken seriously. On the scanner I'm pretty sure the police answer all calls and check them out. I see police responding in my neighborhood, and they seem to be conducting thorough investigations involving the homeless.

I think many homeless people don't trust the police, they think that the police will not investigate the crime against them, so why call? I know that many homeless people are considered to be 5150, or emotionally unstable, and when someone who is considered to be 5150 reports a crime, they are not taken as seriously. BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. See what you've done now I can't shut myself off - I'll be up all night. Why can't I just have my opinion without having to share my life story over and over again? AAAAAAAHHHHHHGGGHHH! It's OK it happens everywhere, just SNOT here. People go off their rocker all the time.
