Sports Bar
updated: Nov 18, 2011, 11:01 AM

We have a Grandpa coming in town this weekend, and he wants to watch football at a sports bar. What is the best place in SB or Carp to watch football that actually has volume for older folks?

I think for older (and younger) crowd the Union Ale is a better place to watch the game. It's not as loud or crowded.

Break Time in Goleta is a good spot. They always have free food and all the games, and it is not too crazy in there.

First of all.......who's grandpa is he? You mentioned a grandpa. Where did you get him? Does he have his own family? Why won't he watch TV where he lives? Very curious. Please help here.

I think most of the sports bars have satellite TV (Dish, DirecTV), which carry a lot of games that aren't broadcast here on cable because of blackout rules, etc.

I think Monty's Sports Bar in Magnolia Shopping Center (5100 block of Hollister in Noleta) has louder volume, older customers, and lots of options. I've heard (second hand) it's a really friendly crowd. (I don't drink nor watch sports, so this is only a second hand recommendation.)

Z's Tap House inside of Zodo's Bowling Alley. They have a speaker box you can put in front of you so you can control the volume.

In Carp, go to Sly's. Say hi to bar manager Mandy. Great wine list, amazing cocktails, local beer. Choose from burgers, seafood, or escargot.

In SB, go to Union Ale. Get a pitcher of Mirror Pond or the house IPA. Great reg and sweet potato fries, fried chicken app, pizzas, mac 'n cheese. TVs inside and on the enclosed patio. Good crowd, not too young.
