I know all the jokes, but I am looking for someone who makes a good dark fruitcake in town. Most recipes make more than I want but I have a couple of people who love it and would like to find something that isn't mailorder.

Snarky people, please, no comments - I make a great fruitcake and would be glad to share the recipe if you like. Don't know about stores/bakeries locally.

The fruitcake at Costco looks good, although I've never tried it.

There are good fruit cakes out there - Andersen's offers one during the holidays and the Costco one is really good too. Also online is a company called Meduri that makes some great ones year round. Lots of sources - no need to suffer bad joke fruit cakes anymore. Good Luck in your search.

Details to follow - via some other venue, but it has candied cherries, and raisins, soaked in Wild Turkey bourbon, and pecans. That's the extent of the fruit.

My dear Mother and Dad used to make "Fruitcake Haters Fruitcake"...which was delicious. It had no candied fruit, all dried fruit and nuts with plenty of liquor in it....Dad's job was stirring the batter, which kinda had the consistency of wet cement! I wish I had the recipe...sigh.

Aquaholic, there's a recipe at the website Christmas cookies . com that is named just that! I wonder if it is the same one...No liquor, but that doesn't mean it can't be added. It was originally submitted to a newspaper some thirty years ago, and has stayed in circulation ever since.

I should post a separate request, but this is sort of related, and the answer may be the same: How about good plum pudding and hard sauce? The hard sauce is a MUST! I too would rather avoid mail order.

If you want commercial plum pudding and hard sauce (very good!), you can get it at any of the Brit-loving food places in town--Indochine out by Kmart, for sure, no doubt Hampstead Village and Montecito Grocery. Gelson's has it, too.

I never liked fruitcake either until I had a Kentucky Boubon Fruitcake by the Trappist Monks of Kentucky. Recipe handed down from an Abbey in France. This stuff is bomb. http://www.gethsemanifarms.org/.

Sorry, but there is no such thing as a good fruitcake. I used the ones my mother in law baked for us as a doorstop, and as blocks to keep my truck from rolling down the driveway. Sorry. I just say it like it is.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I did have the Costco one and it was ok but not boozy enough for my taste. Katkar - your's sounds great! How would we get your info? I'll check out the Trappist one and the fruitcake haters one. I love Edhat for all this great information sharing!!

My auntie covers the Costco fruit cake in cheesecloth, puts it in the fridge in a container big enough to hold it and pours the liquor (brandy, bourbon or whatever you like) over it daily until she thinks it's soused enough. She and her friends LOVE it!

One more thing...there's a place in Texas that makes a real good one. Just google Texas Fruitcake and you should be able to find it. I think Harry & David have some as well. They seem awfully expensive when you order online. The Costco one is very reasonably priced and very good. They might already be in the stores. Maybe my auntie does not pour liquor over it daily...just called her to find out but she's not home...but she does let it sit a bit after soaking it before eating it. I'm guessing that the amount of liquor is a personal preference. With all the suggestions you should be as happy as a sugar plum fairy or a nutcracker this season, KATCAR!!

Years ago, I handed out samples of Hostess fruitcake. I was looking at theirs in the store the other day, and it looked pretty good. I was actually tempted to buy one.

I am a fruitcake lover, have made my own and was very disappointed in Costco's. The steeping idea mentioned above might have merit, though, and the Trappist and cake-haters options look check-worthy too. There is a great cake called Jamaican Black cake, made with burnt sugar and prunes (oops, dried plums) raisins, currants and lots of nuts that is a real winner too - the NYX has a recipe. I don't understand why everyone doesn't love fruitcake and have always assumed they have just never had a good one! In general, commercial mass market baked goods are very marginal, yes?
