Halloween Santa Barbara Style

The Urban Hikers, Peter Hartmann & Stacey Wright
This week we took a break from our quest to walk all 256 miles of public streets within
the city limits of Santa Barbara, and instead took a couple of extra laps around a
handful of neighborhoods to see what our neighbors were scaring up in the way of
home decorations this Halloween.
Once we got started snapping pictures, we had a hard time controlling our "shutter
finger". As a result, we have hundreds of photos, which we've pared down to our top
choices. Ed and his dedicated staff have decided the best way to showcase these
spooky, creepy, funny, elegant and oft time "over the top" displays is by way of a photo
gallery and we agree. Our categories are loosely defined, but this is what you can
expect to see...

And then there's a guy we met putting up his pirate display. His name is Don, and
there's no doubt in our minds that his alter ego is Captain Jack Sparrow. He starts each
October first, adorning his Mesa home with all things Pirates of the Caribbean. It's a
crazy good homage to the Captain Jack and his cohorts, and definitely worth a trip
to the intersection of Mohawk and Carlton to check out. Don welcomes all Halloween revelers, and will be all decked out in full Captain Jack Sparrow garb that night. But if
your Halloween plans will keep you away from the Mesa, go by ahead of time and take
a look...if you go after dark, you also catch a glimpse of the light show he'll have in full
tilt mode on Halloween.

As always, we encourage you to get out on foot, wander the streets of Santa Barbara,
take an urban hike of your own, and see what your neighbors are up to. There's a
surprise around every corner.
