Respect the Crosswalk
updated: Oct 28, 2011, 2:41 PM

By Cal, the Adams School Crossing Guard

I am the crossing guard at that intersection. I have been at Adams School for four plus years. During that time I have been threatened by oncoming vehicles attempting to make an illegal right turn. Law or no law, I would like to make one thing very clear: when the crossing guard is in the crosswalk, holding that STOP sign that is exactly what it means! ALL VEHICLES MUST REFRAIN FROM ENTERING THE CROSSWALK. The crossing guard is not the absolute authority, but the STOP sign issued to the crossing guard by the Santa Barbara Police Department, is the sole authority. That STOP sign negates any green light the driver thinks they have when wanting to make a right turn.

In reference to the erected sign. There were no holes dug on city or private property. The sign was mounted on an SBPD issued safety cone that helps ensure my safety. I work for the City of Santa Barbara, the SBPD to be exact. I take my job very seriously. In the four plus years I have not lost any kids, I don't plan on starting now. As for the validity of the sign; it was meant to simply be informative, like the garage sale signs plastered all over town on government owned poles. Slow down and have a great day!
