I have recently heard about Thai papaya salad and it sounds really good. Is there any place in Santa Barbara that serves this?

YES! My Place and Your Place both have it on the menu if my memory serves correctly (har! I slay me). One's on Milpas, the other's up near BevMo.

Don't try any in SB/Goleta your just setting yourself up to be dissapointed. Personally I prefer the Loa or Hmong version a lot better, its very spicy unlike the Thai version. Don't get me wrong the Thai version is good as well just not in SB or Goleta because they cater to a certain clientel if you know what I mean.

Who serves the best larb in SB? I have yet to find a very good one and some places don't even have sticky rice to serve with it.

In Thailand they serve it all over the place, even in shopping malls, and it's incredible. I eat Thai a lot and don't recall a decent Thai papaya salad in Santa Barbara. I'm sure you can get one in LA.

A really good foreign movie is Scent of Green Papaya. It's a cinderella story with a lot of cooking. Amazingly delicious cooking. It's interesting to see how they cut up the papaya.

Galangas papaya salad is actually ok. If you want REAL Thai food I suggest you check out Sanam Luang Café in north Hollywood. Most authentic Thai food you will ever try also no dish exceeds $6.50 plus they are open till 4am just be prepared to wait 30 minutes to be seated because it gets packed. Also to the larb person just make it at home its really easy.

I lived in thailand and we made som yum (papaya salad) everyday! I was excited to try it when I saw it on the menu here but was VERY disappointed. You are much better off going to the indochina market next to kmart buying all the ingredients and making it yourself. Green papaya green chiles garlic apple cider vinegar raw honey lime juice small green beans all mashed together in a mortal and pestle and cherry tomatoes! That's my version which trades out palm sugar and fish sauce for vinegar and honey...ENJOY!

Echo Zen Yai and Tap Thai - I was breathing flames after the one at Tap Thai. I have spent extensive time in Southeast Asia and agree with the poster about the Laos version...hands down that one dish that I always wished I could recreate.
