Abalone Jeweler
updated: Oct 17, 2011, 9:16 AM
I am looking for a jeweler who works with abaolone. I hear it is a highly toxic material. I chipped a round abalone necklace and would like to get it repaired. Can anyone recommend someone to me? Thank you.

I don't know if he works with abalone, but Tuan of Truong & co next to the paseo nuevo theaters is very helpful. I am sure he would be able to recommend someone who does if does not.

The jewler at Patco on Haley did a custom abalone ring for me and did a fine job. They are also reasonable with repairs.

Second the recommendation for Patco on Haley. I have dealt with them and only them for years. They are reasonable and honest in the extreme. If they can't do it, they will recommend someone who can.

Look for Bill Heet on the Carzoid lot downtown. He's been an urchin / abalone diver for years and makes abalone shell jewelry, so he's got the tools and experience. What were you told is highly toxic?

Dust from abalone shell is highly toxic to breathe. Wear goggles and a respirator, or work with it wet.

@artemisia, I had no idea how toxic the aerosolized particles are from abalone shell. I just googled it now. Looks like the advice is to wear a respirator-type thing while grinding and keep it really wet. The say a painter's type mask just won't do. Eye protection is important too!

Thank you to all for the recommendations. It is truly appreciated. And YES, I heard the aerosolized particles are very toxic, so I was to be careful if I tried to grind it on my own. Thank you again.

Two guys in town that I know of, neither of whom do I know how to contact: Jeff Silva - makes beautiful hawaiian fishhook necklaces. Another guy named Lama made the round ones that you see around town. He might not be around anymore. Maybe other edhat viewers know how to contact them.

I worked with Abalone shell years ago, and one must never inhale the dust. It shards like asbestos. It's not toxic, but the shards will never leave your lungs, and they will shred the tissue, which will lead to a particular cancer.
