I have concluded a garage sale and have bags of useful clothing and household items. Does anyone have experience with an agency or charity that will come collect these items? If not, what is the best way to drop them off? Thanks!

Bring them to the Occupy Wall Street 'sitters". They will take what they need and and tell you where you are falling short regarding the choices you have made in your life.

Leave on a curb with sign saying "free." Quick and easy way to get rid of stuff.

Ventura Rescue Mission picks up regularly in SB. Once you get on their list, they'll call every few months to ask if you have anything to donate. You leave the items on your porch in the morning and they're gone by the end of the day. They make it easy, so I donate a lot to them.

480 you must be joking. OP asked about donating items to a charity. Leaving your "trash" curbside with a FREE sign is basically littering and makes our neighborhoods look like eyesores! And who knows where the items go. Alpha Thrift will pick up. 964-1123

Well said, 501. I hate this lazy way of getting rid of stuff. I think it started in Isla Vista quite a few years ago - and that worked. The outgoing students left stuff for the incoming students. But I don't live in I.V.and the occasional blight of someone's cast-offs parked on the sidewalk with a free sign is just awful. It is indeed littering - and I ought to be able to call the police, but I'm sure they have better things to do. Can we make it a county ordinance (I live in Noleta)? Allied Waste and now Marborg, will come once a year and remove all of your junk, FOR FREE! Why don't people avail themselves of that great service.

The leaving on the curb method works great. Many of the items end up in the hands of local families in need. It's not trash and usually doesn't sit around for very long. Only trick is don't put in front of your own house if you prefer not having undesirables loitering around.

Lovely 514, I guess you are suggesting putting it in front of someone else's house so they can enjoy the undesirables loitering around in front of their house and you can have peace and get rid of the unwanted items. Glad I don't live any where near you. I know that, because neither I nor any of my neighbors would do that kind of thing to on another.

We like Goodwill. We take photos of items and get a receipt for tax purposes. It's a great organization. They don't quibble. We had no use for an extra tv one time. It was fine, but one local place actually turned down the donation because it wasn't a F L A T S C R E E N. Incredible!

You can donate items at any of the Alpha Thrift Store locations. They have good hours and are open on weekends. We used to donate to the Salvation Army on Milpas, but that location had really inconvenient hours, and now they no longer exist at that location.

Stuff the thrift shops don't want (and they can be picky) usually disappear quite quickly from the sidewalk in my neighborhood with a "Free" sign. (Be sure and place such a sign so people won't feel guilty about stealing.)

i second the suggestion of the ventura rescue mission. my understanding is that alpha thrift, goodwill, and the salvation army are very choosey about what they pick up, are not always reliable when scheduled, and often throw away lots of the stuff donated. vrm apparently uses everything that is donated, do not seem to be choosey about what they pick up, and in my experience are extremely reliable. they collect from me and my friends regularly in carpinteria and santa barbara.

Freecycle - it's a yahoo group where you post what you have, and those who need it come and pick it up. There are free postings on Craigslist also.

Although it isn't a charity per se, the Assistance League on Veronica Springs Road, SB, accepts clean clothing and household items. They have a nice little shop which displays all items for inexpensive prices, and the proceeds support many charitable causes for children and teens and many other projects for the Santa Barbara area community.

I drive things over to the Assistance League all the time, whenever a box of stuff accumulates I drop it off. They sell things for extremely low prices and I support the causes they give to. It is no big deal to divert over into that neighborhood, and I feel much better that the stuff is going to be re-used, not trashed.

First Congregational Church, 2101 State Street is having a rummage sale Oct. 29th and would probably take your stuff. Call the church at 682-7146 and leave a message if no one answers. Benefits local people and the church. Then left-overs go to one of the charities others have mentioned.

I would never donate to Alpha. They are so greedy, and mark up stuff so high. You can get the same stuff cheaper at K-Mart or any other store in town. Most people tend to think because they are shopping at a thrift store they are getting a good deal (wrong!) Also Goodwill is so picky now, and go through and pick out what stuff they want. I can understand where they are coming from because sometimes people just dump off total junk.
