Reasonably Priced Area Rugs
updated: Oct 05, 2011, 4:08 PM

Where is a good place to buy reasonably priced area rugs locally? I've tried a few stores on lower State St., but they are out of my budget.

Rugs are crazy expensive. We got all ours at Ross for very reasonable prices. Otherwise you are stuck traveling to a Walmart or other big box store.

I have seen reasonable rugs at Bed, Bath and Beyond as well as Ross.

I second Cost Plus World Market. They're on sale right now.

Have you tried this catalog? http://www.homedecorators.com/Rugs/
They have a ton of rugs at reasonable prices.

Another thought...you can often find good and inexpensive area rugs at some carpet showrooms.

Carpeteria in Goleta has a huge selection of rugs and they are very well priced.

Santa Barbara, State Street and reasonably priced do not go hand in hand... sorry.

You might try our thrift stores. You might even find new ones there.

I would assume Cost Plus World Market fits into the stores on lower State thatthe OP has tried. Give Ross (or maybe Marshalls?) a try.

Rugs are expensive because of the differences in the way they are made. The $299 rug at Cost Plus will last about 1/10 as long as the $2999 handmade, wool rug.

Marshall's sometimes has good buys, also try Tuesday Morning (another discount store) - they are on Canon Perdido, west of State.

Sorry to thread jack but where can I get my rugs appraised in SB? I got a few from Afghanistan a while back and had them appraised at $150,000.00 but I feel their worth more now.

It depends on what you're looking for. Maybe you could update with a comment that explains what kind of quality you are looking for, or what style.

Something from kMart or Costco might do fine, but if you're after something a bit nicer, then you won't find it there.

I have two rugs from Pottery Barn that are pretty high quality and have held up nicely. Closer to a true Asian rug quality and definitely not cheap, but not unaffordable at all. When you hit them on sale, they can be about $150-300 for a 5x8 REAL wool rug. You won't find wool at KMart. But again, that might be ok with you.

I second the vote for Carpeteria. I bought 2 very nice 8'x11' rugs from them last year and the prices were great. I've been to all the above mentioned stores and Carpeteria really did have the biggest selection and variety. K-mart does not have rugs & Costco sometimes has random ones but they change their selection frequently so once it's gone, it's typically gone.

I went thru this routine several months ago. What a task! To find a reasonably priced, high-quality product. Tired all the "rug stores" here and in the Woodland Hills area and even in LA. Outrageous and the rugs are so flimsy. You know the mark up must be huge. We thought about waiting for the rug shows at Costco but there wern't any for a long time on the schedule. We ended up getting our 14X10 at the Resotration Hardware Outlet Store in Camarillo. If you can wait they have some great sales coming over the Christmas season. You are getting a clearance price with an additional 30-40% discount on top of it. Of course, the only stock you can pick from is what they have in the store. Otherwise, I would suggest checking the Costco web site for the next rug show.

Devil Dingo Rugs (.com). Randy is up in Monterey but his prices on authentic, mostly handmade rugs are spectacular, and he is a really cool guy!

ROSS is hands-down the best for inexpensive NEW rugs.

If you want used ones for even less, Craig's List for sure. Problem is, you've gotta get them cleaned and THAT isn't cheap.

If you DO go with Craig's List, I use ENVIROSOLUTIONS rug cleaners--he's mobile and comes to you--all non-toxic and VERY reasonable rates. (No, I'm not him nor do I work for him--I promise)! :)
