For what part of your body? Shoulder? Knee? Spine? Hand?

There are many good orthopods in our community.

Dr Sheperd!!, however, if its your upper extremity, I had hand surgery with Dr Ruth and he was amazingly caring, and such a perfectionist!

Ditto to what part of your body - and ditto to Dr. Ruth! Shoulder is Dr. Proctor - hip is Dr. Bradley - knee is Dr. Tacconelli.

Dr. Daniel Craviotto scoped my knee and repaired my torn rotator cuff tendon. Both were done excellently. He is extremely nice. I hear Tacconelli is good too.

Both Craviotto and Tacconelli work out of the same office, SW corner of Hollister and Patterson, so if you go there you can't go wrong.

Dr. Craviotto just performed arthroscopic knee surgery on my boss to clean up a torn meniscus -- we swear by him. I've taken cortisone shots in my knee for arthritis from him that have worked very well and my husband has had cortisone in his shoulder for bursitis and it has been beneficial.

Graham Hurvitz MD...Works with Rick Ryu. Great tech skills and good bedside manner. Had my knee scoped 30 days ago. Doing very well.
They use Hayashida physical therapists. Across the street from Hurvitz and Ryu. They are wonderful as well.

Anyone ever think these "who is the best Dr. in town...." are about as helpful as a list of names in the yellowpages? X is great. X is bad. Y is great. etc?

There was a very extended discussion on this awhile back that had considerable mention of Dr. Ryu's problematic bedside manner. Personally, I felt abandoned by him after an exploratory arthroscopic knee surgery in which he said he found really nothing wrong. What happened was I went to him 3 months after that surgery and when he asked how I was doing and I told him I was having progressively more and more trouble walking short distances -- so it was difficult to walk from one room to the next -- he yelled and accused me of malingering and sent me away with no advice. With a brief visit to a doc-in-the-box where I was treated respectfully and a visit to a physical therapist who rubbed out some adhesions around the surgery site, I was back in business walking and hiking normally. Don't know why Ryu couldn't have tried to help me.

Ryu had great surgical skill operating on my shoulder years ago and had an excellent bedside manner. He called me the day after surgery to make sure everything was OK. It was. I have sent many to see him over the years and they have been happy with the results.

025 I actually think that the referrals that are on Edhat are pretty good. As a nurse in town, the medical referrals I've seen have been spot on. Additionally, I've used other types of referrals from Edhat and been really happy with the service. I appreciate edhat readers thoughtful responses and I make my own decisions using those as just a part of my decision making process. Try it!

Didn't we just have this topic? Seems like Free publicity! Have you tried Physical Therapy/Chiropractic/Acupuncture first? Non-invasive first then...the slice and dice.

Tacconelli is the best. He did both my knees 20 years ago. I have had no problems with either knee.

Dr. Proctor is highly professional, has great bedside manner, and did a wonderful job on my husband's knee. The one he repaired is in better shape than the "healthy" knee.

Dr. Proctor did a complete shoulder replacement for me in 2008. I did post-op rehab at Elite Performance with Chrissy Lombardi. I'm completely satisfied with both. Back to swimming and kendo in less than 6 months.

Dr. Shepard recently operated on my son. What a pro! And, at such a young age, I believe he knows the most recent procedures possible. He shows up to the hospital bed as close as possible to the time he states he'll be there to see the patient. He LISTENS about the pain, and deals with it, too, rather than simply dismissing it as "drug seeking." Pain is so bad with a badly broken leg. Imagine having screws and pins in both of your legs, and the doctor LISTENS to the patient! He's a very nice man, as well. Highly recommend.

Dr. Craviotto (by Patterson) did my knee replacement, and although the recovery is rough, I think no matter who does it, Craviotto is a GREAT doctor. It's unusual to find a surgeon who is so nice. I had to leave Dr. Bradley, who is supposed to be good, because he wouldn't make eye contact with me and I can't tolerate that. Different strokes. OF COURSE we want the best doctor, but being personable is also important to me.

If you're over 64, you should probably ask if the doctor takes Medicare. Dr. Peus doesn't. Craviotto does.

Dr Ryu is great for shoulders or knees. He is also a Dr who considers surgery one of the options, not a cure all. He does not hesitate to tell you if another method will work as well or better. Remarkable!!!

I have found that the best people to ask for orthopedic surgeon referrals are the physical therapists and nurses in town. They see all the results especially the physical therapists. So call a physical therapy office and ask for 2 or 3 recommendations!

I went to Dr. Proctor and he referred me to Dr. Bradley saying he was the best in town. So far Dr. Bradley is not recommending surgery for me but I had all the shots (hyleronic acid and cortisone) and now going to try physical therapy. Thank to all for the other recommendations.
