Carpinteria Avocado Festival
updated: Oct 01, 2011, 11:08 AM

By David Powdrell

On this, its 25th anniversary, the Carpinteria Avocado Festival has grown to become among California's largest free festivals. From October 7th through October 9th, the little hamlet will go all out to welcome friends and neighbors with foot stomping music and scrumptious food. For three days, over 60 rock bands will rotate among 3 stages providing music for young and old. Dozens of food and beverage vendors cater to all your epicurean desires. Every possible concoction relating to the avocado will be there including avocado ice cream and locally brewed avocado beer, both very tasty.

For those interested in competing, there's the largest avocado contest and a guacamole recipe contest. Last year's largest avocado contest winner was a 3 lb, 5 oz monster brought in from the Brown Family.

Here's Sarah Rathbun's award winning guacamole recipe from last year:

5 Local Avocados
4 Jalapenos w/Seeds
1 Bundle of Cilantro
2 Cloves of Garlic
Juice of 1 Lime
Salt & Pepper

Mix well together. Season to taste.

It's a great festival for the whole family to enjoy. Come join us if you can.

"Yeah, but where do I park?" you might be asking yourself. They've made it real easy; Take the Linden or Casitas Pass exits from Highway 101 and follow the "Park N' Ride" signs. Trolleys handle the rest for you. $10 per car. Street parking's available too, but it's sketchy.

Check out the festival's website for more details: www.AvoFest.com

Here are a few photos from prior year Avocado Festivals. If things get too hectic for you, take a break with a casual stroll on our local beaches. Finally, I've included an Avocado Sunset pic for you Edhat sunset photo fans.

Have a great weekend, whatever you choose to do.
