La Sumida carries the best seed inventory I have seen in our area. They have different brands and great advice.

Established seedlings might be worth some money.

My friend has a veggie garden and always goes to IF&S. You can also buy "mess-free" bird seed there for less too (although it's never cheap) :-)

I buy exclusively from Island Seed and Feed, both seeds, and vegetable starts. They're knowledgeable and helpful!

Besides IF&S, there are neighborhood gardening groups. Our Westside gardeners group has seed sharing a couple times a year. Organic gardeners share seeds they've collected and also often share starts. There are groups all over the area.

How do you find a neighborhood gardening group? I live on the Westside and would love to meet and learn from other gardeners in my neighborhood.

Why wait for Spring? I'm just putting in a crop of winter produce; onions, brocalli, cauliflower, cabbage, chard, spinach, carrots and beets (so far). Winter is good for lettace too, and some herbs such as cilantro, which bolts in the summer. I get 6 packs for many of them, off to a good start. Just be sure to prepare the ground well. Island Feed and Seed has Malibu Compost which I've had great luck with.

You can google sbfoodnotlawns.org to find gardeners in your neighborhood to share and learn from. I also recommend Island Seed and Feed for great organic gardening support.

Island Seed and Feed has the best choice--several brands, the whole line, not just the popular varieties. Lots of organic varieties as well as heirlooms and natural hybrids. Plus staff has a good grasp on soils and fertilizer prep for your garden. ( Don't wait for spring if you're going to use organic fertilizers) Start your soil prep now and you will be rewarded. Flicka is right, too--lots of greens and root crops you can plant NOW to use all winter long for fresh, flavorful, healthy food. Lettuce, Chard, Spinach, Kale, Beets, Radish, Onions, Garlic, Carrots, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts,Cabbage, Bok Choy, Tat Soi, Frisee, Parsley, Chives, Cilantro, for a start.

Also, lots of herbs you can plant now for year-round use: oregano, sage, thyme, rosemary, mint (somewhere it won't be a problem if it spreads). Planting perrenials in fall here is good because things can get a good start with the winter rains. Don't bother with tarragon now, it dies back in winter. Strawberries can be good to plant now, depending on the variety. I'm lazy and plant most things except carrots and radishes from six-pack seedlings. Plant radish seeds anytime, and that will be the first thing you can harvest.
