The Lobero Theatre
updated: Oct 08, 2011, 8:00 AM

The Lobero Theatre is the cornerstone for the performing arts in Santa Barbara. Since 1873, the Lobero has hosted a "Who's Who" of music, dance and theatre. From Barishnykov to Brubeck, and the hundred other shows presented each year, there's always something incredible happening at the Lobero.

The Lobero Theatre is California's longest continuously-operating theatre, ardently maintained and operated by the Lobero Theatre Foundation. Their mission is to preserve the historic hall as a performing arts center and cultural asset to the community of Santa Barbara, and to present the highest quality productions in music, dance, and theatre.

The Lobero Theatre has played an integral part of Santa Barbara's history and future. Since its re-opening in 1924, the Lobero has functioned as a true "community theatre," available to all. The Lobero stage hosts more than 20 local performing arts producers, schools and presenters, and serves as a meeting place for several corporate entities. Non-profit clients which call the Lobero home include the Flamenco Arts Festival, Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Opera Santa Barbara, State Street Ballet, New Noise Music Festival and SUMMERDANCE Santa Barbara. Youth companies including Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, Gustafson School of Dance, Montecito School of Ballet and Santa Barbara Youth Ensemble Theatre also make up a core group of community supporters.

The Lobero Theatre Foundation also administers a number of Youth & Community Outreach programs, which include sending professional touring artists to area schools, presenting master classes with professional jazz artists, and offering free tickets for low-income/at-risk families. These opportunities are provided free of charge, and highest priority is given to Title 1 schools with a high percentage of students from low-income families.

In addition to operating the venue for the community's use, the Lobero Theatre Foundation presents 15-20 Lobero LIVE performances each season to enhance the performing arts environment in Santa Barbara. The Lobero Live series brings touring artists that enrich the cultural offerings available, focusing on genres which are most suitable for the hall's intimacy and acoustics, including jazz, blues, bluegrass and folk. The Lobero Theatre has recently been named one of the best jazz venues in the world by leading jazz magazine, DownBeat.

The Lobero Theatre is the community's stage and proudly serves the performing arts organizations that help make Santa Barbara such a wonderful place.
