Where is a good place in the Goleta/SB area to get an affordable oil change on a 2002 Toyota Echo?

If you bought it at the dealership, try there. We own Nissans and the dealer is always offering oil changes for under $20. For the love of god do not go to Jiffy Lube. Ever. You can usually find coupons for Fast Lane that will bring the price down to $35 or so.

Fast Lane has gotten pricey but they do offer a $15 off coupon online right now so it will be around $35.00 and takes only 10 minutes or so... They have several locations in SB & Goleta.

Contrary to @347's advice, just go to a reputable shop and let them do it so you'll know the used oil and filter are recycled properly. If you elect to do it yourself, go here for disposal sites. Suggest you call first since Pep Boys is listed but long gone.

I agree that you can do it yourself, but you need to be able to find out the correct oil for your car. This is much more subjective than it used to be. If you are disabled or are not mechanically inclined and technically prepared, pay someone who is.

Jiffy Lube, Fast Lane, etc. are all essentially bait 'n switch con artists. Beware! You go in with your trusty coupon for the El Cheapo oil change & lube, sit in the lobby, and before you know it, a guy is presenting you with a sparkling white palate full of mysterious swatches of various colored fluids. He solemnly explains that your car is in dire need of "everything under the sun." Of course they can do the job while you wait & sip their hours-old, acrid coffee & savor day old donuts, all gratis, of course. Here's the wrinkle, that El Cheapo deal has suddenly escalated into an invoice way north of $100! (I'm being conservative.) Stay away from all of these rip off artists! Find a quality, recommended, locally owned & operated service facility that is TRUSTED & has a proven track record of great service & HONESTY. You get what you pay for.

Thanks for all the advice and tips. We purchased the car in Ventura and as for taking it to the local dealer past experiences have been far less then satisfactory. The car has always come back with other unrelated issues. So taking it to either dealer is out of the question. As for Jiffy-Lube or Fast Lane those places have been less then adequate as well. Doing it my self, maybe, however I have not been under the hood of a car in 35 years, not my first choice either. Meineke sounds like a good choice though. Thanks again.

I always take my car and truck to Risden's in Carpinteria. It's a family owned business, and you can trust them not to rip you off! 805-684-6730 ask for John.

The gas station on La Cumbre across from Sears and next to the vet hospital. I can't remember the name but the owner is very nice and honest. I always have my smog test there and this year he alerted me to another problem that I was not told about at my previous inspection from another location.

Toypta of Santa Barbara, especially with the coupons the periodically send to folks on their mailing list. Cheaper than the local fast-lube type places for our cars (a 2007 Sienna and previously a 1977 Corona) and they use the reccomended oil & filter for each vehicle instead of one size fits all.

Jiffy Lube will rip you off! They switched the plug in my oil pan for a worn out one, and told me it needed to be replaced. That oil pan was recently installed by a highly reputable mechanic I've used for years. Those liars either dropped my oil plug in the waste oil and wouldn't admit it, or just switched the part on me to make more money. Disreputable!!!

Another vote for Risden's 76 in Carp. Not the cheapest around, but they do a good job, don't push any unnecessary services, and thoroughly check your vehicle for problems. You get what you pay for. As others ahve said stay far away from Jiffy Lube and the like.

427 & others, beware of that station across from Sears next to the vet hospital. He's a scammer that gets everybody convinced they need to buy a new gas cap or their smog check won't pass! He's been at the ruse for years. He stops the machine hooked up to Sacramento and tells you the bad news followed by the offer to fix it so your car will pass the test. The next time you're by there, check all the gas caps he has lined up along the window on the side of the service bay. Staggering. In fact, I reported him to the SB DA's office for fraud a few years back after I got fleeced for a bargain smog check on a coupon. They told me he was already under investigation due to numerous complaints. Save yourself major grief & CASH and go elsewhere when you need anything other than gas. Best smog place, bar none, for honesty, speed & price is link.

I never support SB toyota. Countless times I've heard ridiculous prices for parts. Often times I get my OEM toyota parts at toyota of northridge or orange county at half the price with free next day shipping. If you want to change the oil yourself its easy. The type of oil is NOT subjective, on new cars its usually written right on the dipstick! An 02 echo is most likely 4 quarts 5w30 either conventional or synthetic. Doesn't matter which When your done changing it, do NOT THROW THE FILTER OUT. Take it to the marborg recycling center in goleta as well as the old oil and they will dispose of it for you. If you still wish to have it changed, go to an auto repair shop, not a jiffy lube. Personally I'd recommend C&S automtive. Locally owned and honest.
