Orthopedist

Can anyone recommend an orthopedist who is good with arthritic necks? Xrays show no disc damage and muscle spasms are ruled out.

Careful, doctors recommend staying away from long term support devices since they can lead to atrophy of the muscles. For short term use they may help. Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplements help, as do moist heat (in the shower or a spa), and massage. Chiropractic/Physical Therapy/or bodywork may offer relief when surgery isn't necessary.

I have an arthritic neck. I use Dr. Lance Schroeder, a local chiropractor. He keeps my head up and my neck turning and pain free. Can't say enough good things about him.

I use Capsasian. It fools the brain - the pain gate theory. The one I buy has a sponge applicator so you don't have to get it on your hands. It is made from hot chili peppers and you don't want to get it in your eyes from an accidental touch. Two naproxin sodium in the morning also helps. Neck pain sucks. I had a two level fusion 10 years ago that fixed it for a while. The down side of that is that the upper and lower disks take an increased load. It is a slippery slope.

If there is no disk damage, then you have nothing to lose by considering massage or chiropractic. I don't know how muscle spasms were ruled out, but I was a chiro skeptic for years. I had severe upper back and neck pain, and resultant headaches. I tried a few different chiros, without real success. Massage always helped, but only temporarily. Then I met a great sports masseuse, who really helped, who referred me to a chiro who also really helped. I have much less neck pain than previously. Don't give up is my message. Think differently, and keep trying alternative solutions -- maybe accupunture? I love orthos too; they've helped with some nasty sports injuries, but spines and necks? Try massage or chiro or something else.

Be careful with Capsacian! After having placed an amount on a leg muscle one time, I had a severe reaction to it, called the company on the box, and they had an RN, along with a physician, treating me on the phone for several hours. The pain was beyond anything that could be described!

I have been seeing Dr. Cochran for years for my neck pain. He's a great chiropractor. I suffered from chronic neck pain for years, and after a few visits to Dr. Cochran, my pain was under control and I'm back to living life normally.

Chiro's are good for exactly what you describe. The ones who have been around a long time are around because they are good. Different people like different techniques. Keep trying until you find one that you like. I hope people don't engage in naming names and trashing publicly like they did the orthors the other day. Ask your friends who they see and start there. Best of luck to you.
